I can never tell quite how Stephane Manel does his illustrations. Sometimes I think scanned repitograph, but is he illustrating exclusively on his machine? Christ, I love his stuff!I'd love to know!

Some of his larger compositions bear the bottom are much better than some of the stuff up top, particularly this one:

Just curious what his process is...I can do this stuff on paper, but his stuff seems to be vectore (well, sometimes). Thanks. :)

bear = near
vectore=vectorAnd I need to continue to study after three hours of sleep. :)

His illustrations are truely great. I´m illustratimg myself and the only tool is my computer.
His illustrations is probably made with a mix of vector and bitmap graphics. You can see that sometimes his work is made partly from a photo (i really dont want to use the word traced when speaking of his work) what you need to create that feeling is:
- Extreme talent like Manel
- Master all graphic apps
- A lot of RAMThen it´s just to start building your illustrations width layers in illustrator & photoshop.
I really feel like making a new illustration now...
nothing like manel:
but just you wait =)

I'd seen some of the simpler stuff for japanese magazines. The the more illustrative later works are really nice. its refreshing to see work in a vector style thats shows some originality. i love soome of the composition too.
very nice

His work has such a naturalized, tangibility to it. Particularly the piece above. I'm going to go out on a limb and say plenty of his work is composed of vectorized drawings and photos with knocked up contrast (as was mentioned). Sent him an e-mail, so I'll find out soon enough.
The reason I'm interested is because I have a more classical education of the arts. Relatively speaking, design is new to me (2-3 years as opposed to all my years studying classically). I really love designing but I've spent my entire life in another medium, so I really appreciate the fusion of the two.
Hell, that's why I like James Paterson and Lee Misenheimer.
That being said, I can't even fathom doing work like that in illustrator. Like I said about naturalization--I swear I can feel a repitograph or a pen and knib hitting that paper. Should it really be entirely composed in Illustrator...time to try and *really* learn illustrator. ;)

BTW, when I said vectorized drawings...I mean scanned drawings that have since been vectorized. I was afraid someone might think "vectorized" meant illustrator-only, haha.

I'd imagine he'd draw the outline and a little detail out on paper, then scan it in and use a large selection of calligraphy brushes in Illustrator and trace over the hand drawn guide.
Some nice work.

I sent him an email also.
Do you think he uses streamline or trace bitmanp at all?
- Gonzalmz0
I feel like he illustrates much by hand and streamlines it--but we shall see. If anyone has good advice for Adobe streamline, please share? I seem to have a really difficult time getting streamline to do what I want.

Thanks for all.
