Hey folks, I was reading somewhere that FTP is actually the best way to share files across the LAN (home lan) so I went and downloaded a FTP server and used my existing client.. it works and everything but still the transfers speeds are only 1.5mpbs.... its a 10/100 LAN running at full duplex mode.
any ideas on how to speed it up?
thanks.

what ftp server are you using? make sure there aren't any 'max' transfer level configurations set in the server.
secondly, do the cables you're using have the 8 wires and not 3 (on the inside of the rj45 connecter).
i have a 10/100 3com pcmcia card but the dongle and cable it came with only has 3 wires. it's the slowest cable i have.
how is your network set up?

all cables have 8 wires.. and its all connected with a 16 port 10/100 hub, netgear 10/100 cards.
was testing with bulletproof FTP server and I made sure that it was on MAX speed (default)

hm. i'll see what i can dig up.
although, using just a hub may not be the best.
you might want to invest in a router or switch at least.
but, i'll look into it.

oh. its a self switching hub. :)
thanks sp.

is it true that by using FTP it'll be its fastest?

well, it should. but, in reality, it shouldn't matter as long as you're on your own lan.
anything you do on your own, internal lan, will be much faster than online.
:)
1.5 mg is not bad, though. really. at least it's not like 10k or something.
