I recently purchased the desktop (1-5 users) font for $350 for a client.
The T&C's essentially say you can only use the font 'internally'.
You are not allowed to make PDFs, jpegs or PNG.Has anyone else ever seen this?
Suggests to me that you cant actually use it?
Thoughts?

That’s ridiculous. Never seen this

wut.

Although, that seems cheap for the whole family as well as being multi-user. What foundry you get it from?

It's Akzidenz Grotesk, Berthold are the only ones who can use it in public. It's their corporate font and they kept that privilege for themselves.
- nb0
Who did you buy it from?

I think the original company got sold or something years ago during the transition to digital fonts... and not all fonts rights were clean at the time.
Might be nobody is in charge and they are owned by some big corp now that never managed to clear the rights and is trying to sell it to adobe or another interesting customer.

“Berthold also offers licenses for unlimited number of computers at single location, within a single country or worldwide. Custom licenses also are available for embedding and other external usage of the font e.g. Digital Publishing, PDF, Flash or Web use requires a Corporate License. For corporate or custom licensing, please contact explaining your specific needs in detail.“
They don’t even have a price for commercial licensing. you have to f’ing email them

Seconding the "wut".
It seems Neue Hass Grotesk's slightly older twin brother has a God complex.

Yeah I think I am going to need to pivot here.
This is fucking stupid.
Buy it but you cant use it

Someone needs to invent a script that parses a font and then re-draws all the metrics, exactly the same, but using entirely different curves for shit like this.
Shit's a 125 year old font.
I must admit, I've used it publicly way in the past for a couple of things, none the wiser.. lol.
.
Actually, re: my first point - if the output is a text-outlined PDF, would that still count? Presumably the curves would be different? I'm unsure how they can ban use in flattened bitmaps..
- Who's the random typefreak that's on a spazzy downvote spree in this thread?garbage

A trademark protects what a typeface is called
a copyright protects how a font program is written
a design patent protects letter design—how the letters appear.

It was pulled from MyFonts for a reason :)
Also why did you purchased the font for a client - the clients needs to do the purchasing so they have the license, not you.
Oh well, pretty sure you can't do nothing about it, but good luck with that.
p.s. recently got some good sans fonts from here (the Oakes collection):
- Oakes makes some really nice stuff...skwiotsmith
- I always purchase and then transfer. Just how Ive always done it.
These supply fonts are DOPEnylon - Yup, and very affordable too, I got all of themgrafician

Get Miletus Grotesk instead. A fine example from a nice small customer friendly foundry:
- I clicked post and saw the image was an svg.. oh well..shapesalad
- Looks good, thanks for the tip!grafician
