Anyone here into Robotics? I am working on a concept for a museum and I want to propose a robot that can move autonomously in a room and pick up objects lying on the floor and put them in a designated place (eg. trash-bin). Preferably the robot is not human-like but 4 or more legged.
so if kids throw for instance red balls on the floor the robot detects them and collects them.
are there out-of the box solutions? Thanks!

The leggedness might start getting complex and a bit haphazard. If you can accept wheeled robots, could Lego Mindstorms robots be worth a look here? Could glue the resultant robot's bits together together to stop the kids pulling them apart!

Try Googling around for Arduino, Hexapod, Colour Detect.
My concern is that whilst I can totally envisage being able to get all the info together and somehow doing this, in your shoes I'd have to be funded and take 6 months to do it... hahaha.
Ideally you want someone you know or is local who's into this sort of shit who you can collaborate with. In different times, I'd suggest getting in contact with hacker spaces and seeing if you can put an ad up or something.
- I totally ignored your 'out of the box' requirement. My bad.
!Nairn - Thanks for your input Nairn. very much apprechiated. I will look into that Mindstorm thing. Also your hacker space idea made me remember that i actually knowa_aachen
