Interactive Maps & Google?

I'm working on something that will use an animated map to present recommended destinations to users, and I'm interested to know what capabilities, software, services, etc. are available that can use Google maps data but with a custom presentation layer over the top of it. Maybe even something 3D or an isometric view. Think of it like a recommended driving route to view 5-8 destinations. You'd start at point A, and as you scroll or click navigation, it would animate a driving route to point B, present info, then point C, etc. etc.
Basically, looking for tools out there that will help keep us from building stuff from scratch at a pretty high cost.
What's out there that provides a visual customization layer over maps that use Google maps data? Any experience with this stuff?

I've used Map box a bit (half the time I have no idea what Im doing)
mapbox.com/maps/
mapbox.com/mapbox-studio/
mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/example
But have not done a destination to destination animation through it. I think it does have that feature though- ughhh foreshorten not working.thumb_screws

Cool, thanks. I came across this doing some research earlier today.

^ My big thing to figure out now is how to incorporate all this into a web page so that it's scrollable and transitions from point to point as you scroll, with the stops along the way to present content. I'm finding some webGL stuff that does that, but it's more 2D, not as 3d and textured as we'd like.
