Hey q00b, anyone here well verse in Recorders?
I'm looking for a portable recorder.
Will use them for interviewing (on the fly). Seeking something that's not big/bulky but that I can put on a table say, or in my breast pocket; with quality audio and will mute, or not bring into focus background noise... ie. if it's on the table at a restaurant, diner, cafe.
There are too many choices out there. Want something relatively simple, for now, but good quality. Open to download an application for my iOS instead of purchasing a $150-399 piece of equipment for a non-committal beginner. In the long run I'd rather spend the dough on a video camera, film cam.
Any ideas for which one to look in to:
1. portable digital recorder
2. handheld voice recorder
3. video player/recorder
4. are there other options?Hit me!

iPhone voice memo

Depending on your phone there's some RODE attachments

Worth mentioning (here especially) it'll be used for actual interviews where the other party knows they're being recorded.

i have a zoom h4n pro, and tbf to utopian it's really not going to be that much better than an iphone on its own for voice interviews...
really you'll need a boom mic or lapel mic to get substantially cleaner audio... the h4n (and i imagine it's successors) have phantom power (to run external mics) and can record on all 4 (internal mic and XLR) inputs simultaneously... i'd rarely use the internal mics in such a scenario.
if you do use the internal mics make sure and bring a small camera tripod to raise the recorder off the table and aim it at your interviewee... if you're recording out doors at all get a dead kitten, i have one by MOVO for the h4n and it's saved me on a few occasions.
- one of my least favourite things about the h4n is that if the battery dies you loose your recording... it's got me a bunch of times.kingsteven
- that would be the feature i'd look for in a replacement...kingsteven
- whatever you get, make sure it comes with a stand or has threads for a tripod. just a few inches off the table and angled... makes all the difference.kingsteven
- yup, i have the h4n, wut king says is truemoldero
- Wow, thanks guisenotype
- I've used this as well for a few productions - and can agree with what @king says!

^ so I’m actually on to something with my original post. Can you recommend a cheap one?
- check this one out https://www.youtube.…kingsteven
- it's a surround recorder but it can be set up stereo, it has a remote and kind of looks like a mic. so it may be more disarming than stereo chromed tentacleskingsteven
- you can pick them up new in a bundle with all those accessories for about 130 noop here.kingsteven
- tbh recording in surround might be sweet for interviews - you would end up with one stereo file with mostly them and one with mostly you...kingsteven
- omw to B&H tomorrow. tx! will pick up the tripod too.notype

Sony is pretty good for voice recorders:
- This ICDUX is more in my budget. Will compare the two. I think my dad has an older Sony version, he loved it. Thanks for the reminder.notype
