Is this a sailing school? What's the significance of the anchor and lighthouse?
Not sure if I dig the anchor and lighthouse idea, the anchor feel a bit cartoonish compared to the lighthouse. Maybe the lighthouse is on top of the anchor rather than morphing into it.
It all feels a bit crammed and busy too, nothing really stands out, too much competition between elements -- i think mostly from the black ribbon in the middle. Perhaps think about simplifying things, like getting rid of the inner fills or even all the fills, less colors, and maybe think about another treatment for the stuff in the ribbon, maybe that's wrapped at the bottom.
I like the light rays from the light house but think the only one that might work well with print is the one up top where its not overlapping other important elements.
Not a bad start though

Agree with Baskerville.
Also, I would re-think your choice of type. What looks to me like either Garamond or Minion is really, really played out, especially for universities. Ditto Trajan Pro.
Maybe something like Leitura Roman 3:
... or Leitura Display Roman:
Although I would probably also experiment with breaking the university typography trend, and play with some sans serifs, or maybe a nice slab.

Send them to the client right now.
Stop listening to this pretentious lot of cunts (including me).

An anchor has nothing to do with a lighthouse either. Seems like a strange pairing.
- you never been to the sea, do you?uan
- and did you ever design a logo?uan
- But lighthouses are already on land.freedom
- don't lighthouses guide ships (that have anchors) for safety?capn_ron
- Lighthouses aren't always on land, lol...set
- to say a lighthouse and an anchor have 'nothing to do with eachother' is completely retardedset

make type / font thicker so when you reduce in size it will still read.
or you can always remove type in the smaller options and stack underneath of make the type follow circle path outside of graphic.

The Anchor/Lighthouse is really nice!
I like seeing the anchor larger in relationship to the other elements as in the first 2 examples -- But the fine key line doesn't do the anchor justice so it has more presence in the 3rd option (where it lives in negative space)
So # 3 for me, too

I like how in the third version the colors go to the limit of the logo.
but i think the first one works better no doubt.plus what brainbridge wrote.

not gonna work at web resolution or mobile the details too fine.

great input in this thread, QBN'ers never disappoint when it comes to help and feedback.
you have:
black
grey
white
blue
brown
yellowplus:
grading effect.
and:
too many colors.
too many small details.
shadows.
thin outlines that don't bring anything.
too much text in such a small space.
elements over type.maybe the client likes it now but I guess when they'll need to use it in smaller sizes or want to use a monochrome version they will understand it doesn't work.
I would start by removing the "Tua Luce Dirige"...

Ahh such an old school QBN thread. Refreshing!

Thanks for all the great feedback.
Why anchor?
This is a University with ties to some Catholic tradition and network. Anchor is their symbol of Christianity, My initial idea was to create a hidden cross over the anchor with the lights of the lighthouse. Why Lighthouse?
The school is in Palos Verdes, a neighborhood of LA. Their landmark is this exact lighthouse.
The university is also situated on top of a hill overlooking the ocean.Their slogan is also happened to be "Direct us by thy light" (Tua Luce Dirige)
So I incorporated all these elements. Clients hasn't seen this yet, they might ask me to remove some of these main elements but I wanted it to be more definitive/descriptive of their location & ideals.
This is a rebranding project, their current name is Marymount California University, and there are 9 Marymount Universities with some of them being in California, they are tired of getting mixed by these other institutions, so this will be presented to their board with the hopes of persuading them to change the name of the school.

Id say simplify the logo A LOT more. You'll have trouble reading the logo at small sizes. Make sure the logo works well in BW. Work on a few more iterations, its not quite there yet.

anchor or lighthouse. the juxtaposition of the two is terrible. In no way will that ever be timeless. choose one or the other. not both.
main text around the outer edge with enough room to fit the 3 words across the bottom might be a place to start.
work on a unique lighthouse or anchor icon.
type, white space, and scaling are keys to your success.
good luck.
no gradients!

Is the brown set in stone? Pretty rank. Would a green look nicer?

A good read for someone learning about logos:
