Getting an iMac tomorrow after years of using my MBP as my primary computer, either on its own or connected to my 27" monitor. Getting it primarily for recording so that it's in my basement with my recording gear, always ready to go, no need to connect stuff, close applications, etc.

Realized that with the 5k Retina screen I'll probably want to slowly move to photo editing on it and other design work. Getting a 2TB Fusion Drive in it.

Trying to break down a good storage approach that makes things easily shareable between multiple computers:

    - Recording files for Logic
Store working files on external Thunderbolt drive.

    - Photos for Lightroom - pre-edit
Store photos and libraries on external drive so they
can be accessed easily on iMac and MBP.

    - Edited Photos
Store on Google Drive (currently what I do)

    - PS, Illustrstor files
Store on Google Drive for easy access anywhere

    - Backup Process
4TB USB3 external drive on iMac, continue using
2TB drive for MBP (backs up a 1TB external drive
    and 1TB SSD drive.

    Couple other things:
I don't really care about having a home cloud or media server. We use Spotify for streaming music or occasionally connect to computers on Apple TV. Don't really buy many movies and if we do we buy or rent on iTunes and Apple TV.

Any thoughts on doing any of the above different? I'll need to buy external drives for the iMac; don't need them immediately and my first thing to add is more RAM. Thanks guys.

Keep all my work-in-progress files on a combo of Dropbox and Add's cloud. (I can switch from my laptop to my desktop on-the-fly). My font's are synced through Suitcase fusion

Have a 4TB drive hooked up to my Apple Extreme router for Time machine b/u's of all computers

have 2x 4TB externals for archive and other working files not on Dropbox (one of the 4TB drive is set to mirror the other)

    • ADD's = Adobe Cloud. oopsGnash
    • the 2x 4TB drives are direct connected to my desktop. I wanted to get a NAS but was so much cheaper to get the 2 4TB drivesGnash
    • How are you backing up multiple computers to a single drive with Time Machine?mg33
    • Further... how are you doing that over AirPort Extreme? Would love some details.mg33
    • I have the external drive plugged into the extreme base station. The drive becomes available to the network via wifi.Gnash
    • You can have multiple TM b/u's on a driveGnash
    • it's slow the first time you b/u but after that you don't even notice (to TM i mean)Gnash
    • Cool, thank you! I just read something about it earlier today. Gives me options for wiping a 2TB backup drive and using it as a new external.mg33
