So I need to get a LOT of sound, like, legit really loud. How would you go about this with an imac? Im sure there are speakers that I can buy, but will I get a lot of juice just hooking up external speakers to it, or do I need to run them through something to get a boost?

You could always get a little set of Tannoy 402 monitors as they have a 3.5 aux jack right on the back of em. http://www.tannoy.com/creation/p…

And how do these hook up to the imac? And Ill get a lot of sound out of these just hooked straight up to an imac?
- Oh, and how do you hook 2 of them together? Sorry new to all this.CygnusZero4
- iMac headphone jack out to back of one of the Tannoys aux input, then that one connects across to the other and i think you can set which one is L vs R on backprophetone
- these are "active" speakers, the amp is built in to each of them, just feed them an audio signalprophetone
- i have basically the same setup, but with Yamaha HS5's - mac out to a headphone/monitor a/b box, then to my speakers, no ampprophetone
- I do the same with a set of Audioengine A5 powered speakers.monospaced

Honestly:

OR something comparable.
I just got the speakers and am getting the sub.
Perfect 2.1 system.
I'm close.
No need for 5.1, etc.
You COULD hook them up to a receiver and system, BUT let's be honest less time on a computer is better.

^ And do those just hook straight into a mac in the 3/4 jack?
- Yes sir.
I considered the things you considered very heavily; i don't game here SOOO I just wanted tight sound for a small space.
PSB is Canadian...ideaist
- Yes sir.

And when you crank this up on an imac ideaist, woould you say it gets quite loud, like potentially annoy the neighbors loud?
- WITH the sub, yes.
BUT I'm aging (rapidly).
With wisdom, I understand the quality trumps the quantity of sound.ideaist
- WITH the sub, yes.

See the thing I dont really understand here is when you crank up the sound on your imac, it doesnt get THAT loud. Its a decent volume, but not exactly LOUD. So how does it provide juice for external studio speakers like this without some sort of boost? I dont get how it works.
- get a speaker set that has its own power source. I'm using some nice little Bose computer speakers. A bit bass-y but whateverSquiddy
- it doesn't go louder because of the speakers dimensions, to prevent damageuan
- the iMac only sends a signal, the volume isn't really something you fuck with ... the speakers/amp do all the rest after the signal is sentmonospaced

- < They're all good at this price point.
JUST don't try to go cheap on a system (2.1+) and instead get either a 2.0 or a 2.1.
Quality > quantity > value.ideaist - yes, these are the shit!monospaced

Another option:
If you want to go the receiver/speaker combo route and have an AirPort Extreme you can use an airport express to connect to the receiver.
I do this at my home office because I had an old receiver and speakers I wanted to bump. I also had a printer on the other side of the room and didn't have space for all that shit to be next to my computer. The airport express helped solve that problem quite nicely. Although it did cost me a little more.

3.5 jack straight to amp, then fill your boots and get as big an powerful amp as speakers as you want!

Can't go wrong with Audioengine for standalone powered speakers. Like the Tanoy, these are basically studio monitors, but more geared for home use.
The A2 is loud, but you get the A5s if you really want to upset the neighbors. Add a sub, like others have said, if you're really on a mission.
- These take a standard 3.5mm jack, but shown here with proper cables and a DAC, sold separately, but highly recommended.monospaced
- Yeah, some good active speakers.jagara
- whoa these look dopeSquiddy
- uan also recommended this brand a couple posts backmonospaced
