Been on a mac for the last 15 years. I've been doing a lot of rendering lately and I'm falling behind with the gpu rendering going on with octane/redshift etc.
I've resolved to buy or build a pc based on the new 1080ti (or 2) for the studio. Anyone have any advice or preferred manufacturers?
- mekk0
What kind of rendering (software)?
- mekk0
wait for the 1080ti to arrive so Titan Z prices drop, rest is standard high end parts:

A dual high end CPU setup is going to cost some serious $$ but I assume you already know that. What makes this setup really fast is the PCIe drive at read/write speeds of roughly 2GB/s.

yeah man, been doing a lot of VR work, I'm regretting the mac pro trashcan purchase big time
- sad to hear stuff like this. why did a company as big as apple with its history of serving creatives not bother to keep on top of the pro market.fadein11
- why don't they have a creative pro division. it's bizarre.fadein11
- my studio has x3 trashcans - worst fucking computers I've ever ownedJulesvm
- done with appleJulesvm
- that's what I've wondered...they have enough cash to buy any company they want and keep current, if only for reputationformed
- last I read, and it makes sense, they want out of the PC market, just no enough profitsformed
- At a certain point they've gotta say hey, we have tens of billions, that's enough profit right? Let's make something good.monospaced
- or just drop the charade and stop selling macpros that are +3 years old at the same priceJulesvm

right now trying to weigh building my own against ordering one.. so far I've found these providers...
http://www.boxx.com
http://www.digitalstorm.com
https://www.pugetsystems.com
https://www.falcon-nw.com- also on the linux side there's https://system76.com…Julesvm

this is a cool concept as well:
https://system76.com/servers/ibe…- Terrible terrible customer service. Do not buy from them... Great idea thoughmugwart

so... what's the best recommendation on where to buy parts for a DYI package?
someone mentioned pcpartpicker.com... newegg has a 'super combo' section where you can buy setups that you put together: https://www.newegg.com/DIY-PC-Su…
I'm in real need of some speed / power and my Mac(s) aren't cutting it. I really don't want to go back to Windows but I suppose I can handle it until Mac pulls their heads outta their asses. I'm not about to spend up-to 3x that of a DYI PC combo on a Mac to make it comparable in speed. $1800 can build an amazing PC these days.
I'll still have my pretty lil MBP so I can 'appear' intellectual when visiting clients and coffee shops but will gladly get back to my redneck ways at home w/a cheap PC... just looking for advice on the best place to shop!
- I ended up with a combo or newegg / amazon primeJulesvm
- your local DIY computer is very likely packed with nerds that will be thrilled to help, I've been going to small stores for years for this kind of stuff.zarkonite
- I can handle the build... just curious where folks go for this (customer service, warranty, price etc)PonyBoy
- I think that's what he means. Your local, private computer shop for parts.ETM
- ah... yeah... gotcha... i can still build it (save on labor) but have someone guide me... good idea, zark
Do I avoid Fry's Electronics?PonyBoy - I (slowly) built mine in about half a day with no PC experience for about 20 years. Just followed the placement guide in the mobo instruction book. No problems.face_melter
- I was surprised how modular everything is now. Plugs are unique for each component - you just have to be wary of the order of some connections.face_melter
- I use New Egg for everything. Make sure to click "New Egg" as the supplier or you might get it from a different company.section_014
- I'm sold on Newegg... thanks for the help, everyone :)PonyBoy
- Unless you have really specific needs. You're probably better served buying a good dell tower on sale. At least you know everything plays nice together.monNom

1. Go to a place that builds professional workstations.
https://www.mediaworkstations.ne…2. Find one you want. Copy the build!
3. Use https://PCpartpicker.com to source all the parts and prices.

oh boy, from my personal experience, don't build your own pc, but a ready built one and be happy
get a boxx or a dell precision, it is not only about putting expensive parts together, there's a lot more to it than that, specially software architechture and shit I don't know
lost so much money trying to build one, got a dell for a few hundreds more and never had to worry about chipset shit
- It’s not THAT much more.monospaced
- +1 on buying off the shelf. Hardware conflicts and driver issues aren't worth the headache.monNom
- I remember it being 30% more if you compare the price of each component to the full price of a dell computer on your door, worth itfeel
- specially if you're building a high end machine, your off the shelf machine would come with support and stuff like thatfeel
- I've bought all machines from Dell or from a confident small computer shop... I trusted them allways and zero problems with hardware everOBBTKN

- shit I remember the days of an avid suite taking up an entire room. It would take me hours to carry the hard drives and hardware.mugwart
