Appliance suggestions? Don't buy Samsung appliances!
- Really? None? Heard their washers/dryers are decent? And their fridges get good reviews too. But I'll definitely consider other brands too.CincodeMayo
- I bought a samsung washer 2 years ago and it's already being recalled.fooler
- Sears Outlet scratch and dent section FTW on appliances! We got a bargain washer/dryer set there. Not fancy, but totally functional.nocomply

Look into the school system if you're thinking about having kids. I wish I would have know this.
- This is pretty much at the top of our list of things we look at next to how many beds/baths & square footage. If not for our future kids, definitely for resale.CincodeMayo
- I bought 10 years ago and didn't even think of that. 2 kids later and I'm in one of the worst school districts and out grew the house.fooler

I think for first time home owners you can take out of a 401k for your down payment with little or no penalty. I wish I would have know this.

If there's an item you want in the house when you tour it, ask if it can be included as part of the deal.
When my wife and I bought our place the family living here had a piano in what is now my home office that I would have loved to own.
Turns out they gave it to a friend who was willing to come pick it up because it was too much of a hassle to move.
I'm sure they would have been happy to leave it.

- Thanks! Good tip. We'll definitely ask about things we like.CincodeMayo

get the best home inspector you can get.
- Ditto to this. And appreciate the level to which they can seem neurotic about attention to detail.mg33
- yeah... if you can have them with you when your viewing, it will be super valuable.Al_dizzle
- Luckily our realtor is a former contractor so he's been pointing out lots of things. Definitely helpful.CincodeMayo

...is some scary shit. Especially here in LA. But I think the wife and I are close to getting one.
Any tips? Appliance suggestions? Alarm company suggestions? Questions to ask during inspections and closing? Been reading up on it but if you guys have any other helpful advice I'll take it.
