I was brought up in Spain and currently live in London with an Italian for a partner. If we vote Out I'm at best moving to Edinburgh (unlikely, it's too cold for 'er indoors) or more-likely moving to Spain or Italy, before I'm disallowed.

I'll be fucked if I'm staying in this soon-to-be squalid backwater of parochial self-interest and navel-gazing post-post-Empire self-delusion.

It's absurd to ask for people to vote on a matter like this, elected leaders should point specialists in Economics, Politics, Sovereignty, History, etc.. (The Parliament) to decide it.

Truth is Cameron felt threatened by Farage during the election and had this brilliant referendum idea. Cameron is to blame for this mess.

"A good friend of mine came up with a great idea. If you don't have the time/inclination to find out all the facts about the EU referendum (I don't blame you) and are possibly unsure which way to vote, perhaps knowing how other notable people are thinking could help out.

Here are a few that strongly believe the UK should remain a member of the EU:

    • Governor of the Bank of England
    • International Monetary Fund
    • Institute for Fiscal Studies
    • Confederation of British Industry
    • Leaders/heads of state of every single other member of the EU
    • President of the United States of America
    • Eight former US Treasury Secretaries
    • President of China
    • Prime Minister of India
    • Prime Minister of Canada
    • Prime Minister of Australia
    • Prime Minister of Japan
    • Prime Minister of New Zealand
    • The chief executives of most of the top 100 companies in the UK including Marks and Spencer, BT, Asda, Vodafone, Virgin, IBM, BMW etc.
    • Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations
    • All living former Prime Ministers of the UK (from both parties)
    • Virtually all reputable and recognised economists
    • The Prime Minister of the UK
    • The leader of the Labour Party
    • The Leader of the Liberal Democrats
    • The Leader of the Green Party
    • The Leader of the Scottish National Party
    • The leader of Plaid Cymru
    • Leader of Sinn Fein
    • Martin Lewis, that money saving dude off the telly
    • The Secretary General of the TUC
    • Unison
    • National Union of Students
    • National Union of Farmers
    • Stephen Hawking
    • Chief Executive of the NHS
    • 300 of the most prominent international historians
    • Director of Europol
    • David Anderson QC, Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation
    • Former Directors of GCHQ
    • Secretary General of Nato
    • Church of England
    • Church in Scotland
    • Church in Wales
    • Friends of the Earth
    • Greenpeace
    • Director General of the World Trade Organisation
    • WWF
    • World Bank
    • OECD

Here are pretty much the only notable people who think we should leave the EU:

    • Boris Johnson, who probably doesn’t really care either way, but knows he’ll become Prime Minister if the country votes to leave
    • A former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions who carried out a brutal regime of cuts to benefits and essential support for the poorest in society as well as the disabled and sick
    • That idiot that was Education Secretary and every single teacher in the country hated with a furious passion for the damage he was doing to the education system
    • Leader of UKIP
    • BNP
    • Britain First
    • Donald Trump
    • Keith Chegwin
    • David Icke

So, as I said, if you can’t be bothered to look into the real facts and implications of all this in/out stuff, just pick the list that you most trust and vote that way. It really couldn’t be more simple.

And if you are unsure about leaving, don't."

The problem with the whole immigration debate is that EVERYONE in power is fundamentally lying about the issue.

Our economic model is predicated on the assumption that there will alway be an underclass of some sort to pay poorly to do all the shit work 'we' don't want to.

That won't change if we stay, that won't change if we leave.

That underclass is currently made up of comparatively poor immigrants - most of whom now come via the EU, most of whom within that tranche are actually from the EU. 'Most'.

If we leave we'll close off one route for people to come over, but still have a need for people to come over, so the borders will open to people from everywhere else, beyond Europe.

To be crass for a second - there will be more 'brown' people filling that gap than European 'white' people.

This is not what the right wing, the brexiteers, the Farage brigade want. This is not their preferred option, because the immigration debate is obviously an unstated racial and nationalistic one. The face of Britain has changed these last decades and will continue to do so, and no one since Enoch Powell has really engaged in the conversation, for better or worse, 'why' this is happening.

So, these people wanting the 'right sort' of immigration are being delusional by wanting to leave Europe.

Frankly, I think the debate about mass-immigration is important and does need addressing, but it is a super-European debate, it is a fundamental economic philosophical debate and one that no one - NO ONE - wants to go anywhere near.

The whole mess is an intractable knot of shit and is going to get a lot worse whether we stay or whether we go.

    • Nicely put. I think this is what I was trying to say earlier. Like you say, this referendum will not bring debate about any of the important subjects.Ianbolton

One of the key points for me during this whole debate was when Michael Gove (cunt) said:

“People in this country have had enough of experts”

Yes, don't listen to what the fucking egg heads are saying my little plebs, vote from your gut and remember how nasty anyone who is slightly different to you is.

the issue with migration is obviously complex.

the 2015 net figure of 333,000 is a record high and actually dropped at the start of 2016.

This "net migration" figures occured while immigration didn't increase significantly. The net was high because there was a drop in emigration.

Obviously other complexities arise with the breakdown. E.g. some are EU (roughly 180,000 of the 330,000 were EU citizens) some are students, returning ex pats, some are EU and some are non EU.

Pricks like Farage say the UK has no control of its borders. This is not entirely true because EU citizens fall under EU rules whereas the UK has a higher level of self control over non-EU citizens.

    • around 40% are students.fadein11

The main question is what is 'the EU' and where is it going? (great info graphic in the feed btw)

    definitions.

    1. A geographical area that has created a trading block to make trade easier and to protect the economies within the trading block.

    2. A geographical area that is the above with the economic instruments to manage the supply and demand of labour and markets - free movement of people etc.

    3. A political union with shared government apparatus as well as the above.

    4. The above with a shared judicial layer, to harmonise laws and values across said 'block'

    5. A united states of Europe. Central Government, regional authority.

When we last voted (1975) we voted for No1 - We are now between 4 or 5.

As a committed European, I just can't stand this faceless army of eurocrats that are pretty unaccountable.

There was a great quote on Question Time last week in the UK. "The sovereignty of this nation is not the politicians of this country to give away - but to protect".

To many politicians act like it's their to give away.

I honestly think, you are either in big for it or your not.

Like 70% in - in a referendum it should be 65/70% to change the constitution of a country.

When the Scottish referendum happened a lot of people said it was crazy to allow 51% to win.

Insanity. It should be a collective will. a Movement of the majority people.

This is all going down party lines. the result will be 50 something vs 50 something.

    shouldn't change a direction of a people over a few % points.

Which gets me to another point.

The other issue that ERKS is that the argument for staying in is that The Eu is a 'good' force. A Socialist, egalitarian, progressive movement against the forces of capitalism and self-interest.

    Bollox.

People think that this is about some home county tories vs. the urban left.

    It isn't

the people that have lost the most from the EU are the working classes of Europe.

Never before in modern history have we had unemployment like we have now.

Never before has a policy (freedom of movement) done so much to compress wage inflation.

It's the very fucking capitalists many here despise that have benefited the most out of this current arrangement.

There are no human rights that the EU have that are better than the Magna Carta.

The EU has not invented Google, etc or innovated in any area of industry whatsoever.

It is a stifling, muddling bunch of unequal countries trying to make it work.

    It's fucked.

Anyone, anyone who thinks the EU is a good thing - go talk to a Greek - The way they dealt with a sovereign nation was so disgraceful - in many ways worse that Putin.

IT, the EU, hates free enterprise, and capitalism - but equally it hates the left, the socialist.

It's a technocratic lobby group that creates nothing, improves nothing and hasn't turned the world most economically productive area into something bigger than the sum of its parts.

    GET THE FUCK OUT.

    rant out.

    • maybe the ballot paper will have the question 'what is the EU and where is it going?' - with a spare page for your notes.Fax_Benson

I could write something, but I think this says it all:

A world of opportunity is waiting for a fully independent Britain. This country is a leading economic power, its language is global, its laws are trusted and its reputation for fair dealing is second to none. To say we cannot thrive free of the EU’s constraints is defeatist and flies in the face of this country’s great mercantile traditions.

Indeed, so fragile is this political construct that the departure of one of its members, and especially one as big as the UK, threatens to trigger terminal instability. And why is that? If this were a robust democratic institution, underpinned by a thriving economy and a content and happy citizenry then Britain’s withdrawal should have no impact at all. Of course, if it were such a utopia then we wouldn’t be having a discussion about leaving in the first place; but it isn’t.

I'm guessing you're trying to be amusing or humourous, mekk - if so, perhaps you'll want us to stay in Europe, because that those two witless gurgitations were about as funny as dogshit on my shoe. As far as I'm aware, the one thing us Island Monkeys are liked for over in Germany is our sense of humour, for better or worse.

If you are being serious, perhaps it's that sort of snooty arrogance that people in Britain react to and want no part of? I know that it's riled me and I'm very pro-Europe, if not particularly pro-EU.

Whatever - your country needs the EU a lot more than the UK needs the EU, so enjoy ... I guess? Sounds like we're not wanted beyond being a customer for your agglomerated industries, so I'm sure we'll happily add on tariffs to reduce the benefit to you. I'm sure there are a few other countries in the EU who'd love to do the same...

what happens if Wales, Scotland, England or NI vote in a majority that is not consistent with the overall majority? could that lead to the break up of the UK?

I imagine it would be harder to govern in that context

    • Scotland already said they will have a new independence referendum if they are dragged out of the EUchrisRG
    • Scotland? The Scotland that proclaimed its non-existence as a country just two years ago?shaft
    • the vote doesn't work like that - it's a simple leave or remain vote across all british citizens - not split like that.fadein11
