Great thrill ride. Johnson pulled it off.

    Spoilers:
Loved that Boba Fett is back, I always knew he would survive the sarlacc creature from Jedi
The Leia lightsaber battle was okay, Fisher looked slow with the moves but it worked well enough
Luke turning to the dark side was totally predictable but sets up the next chapter.
JarJar/Smoke situation seems kinda forced but whatever. We will wait til the final chapter
    Finn dies.

    • Wait, is the JarJar thing real? IDGAF about a fucking Star War, and won't be watching this movie. But if JarJar is back, I'm tuning in.garbage

    • prequels dialogue is actually way better than 7 + 8 though. Force Awakens is an embarrassing mess of bullshit dialogue and fake nostalgiafadein11
    • I disagree. I felt the dialog in the prequels was awful. I also have the opinion he's not really a good writer at all, especially with dialogue.monospaced
    • lol, as if he's known as a screenwriter... he created concept cinema. he's writes stories, worlds etc. he's never been known as a great screenwriter.fadein11

I liked this new Star Wars movie. Is pretty fun and has some epic star warsy moments.

Surprised by all the haters. This new one was dealt a bad hand and pulled off the impossible imo (just). Don't think the problem is this film - it's the fact that the one before completely fucked the whole trilogy over by having zero character development, no chemistry between characters, killing off the main villain, killing the main Skywalker, ending with zero cliffhangers and then sadly having Carrie Fisher pass away. Yikes. Weirdly there's a bunch of critics I read and listen to defend the shit out of that Last Jedi movie. Boggles my mind.

    • Superman vs Batman writer on Rise of Skywalker. Need I say more? The first half of the movie is utter crap. Worse than Last Jedi imo.NBQ00

ok. so it's obvious kylo and rey are brother and sister correct?

luke said he was training a few kids to be jedi and ben was one of them. when luke confronted ben, ben brought his hut down on luke, and thinking luke had turned (or the jedi were bad) burned the place down, stole the millenium falcon, and headed off to jakku to drop off his sister whom he wanted as far away from the jedi and/or siths as possible. it explains why the falcon was on jakku and helps explain why ben has a pretty obvious soft spot for her.

then, ben took the remaining jedis in training to the dark side. snoke knows ben and rey are brother and sister and it's why he could connect the two of them maybe? also why ben killed snoke to save his sister and try to get her to join his side. I think ben wanted to kill snoke anyways because he was a big bully and this was just icing on the cake.

the guards they fought were the other jedi ben took from training which is why they fought so well.

all of this leads up to the inevitable.... "Rey... I AM your brother" but it will sound like this

This movie has really stayed on my mind for the last couple of days. That makes it a great film in my eyes.

I think it's a lot deeper than a childish sci-fi opera. It plays with the middle grey-area of light and dark much more than any Star Wars movie to date. Yoda and Kylo share the same F it attitude towards structure, yet are on totally different sides. Luke struggled with darkness himself , he almost killed Han's kid on an impulse! Being a hermit is not easy on the psyche.

Poe's impulsiveness made him think he was a hero, but he got so many killed...and for what? Is he Trumpy?

This is going down as one of the great Star Wars films of all time from an intellectual standpoint.

Also, what was the point of Finn’s meeting of Rose and side mission? It lead to nothing right???

It felt like there were a lot of these moments... I just watched it so I’m trying to think if I missed something there... the force sensative kid in the end? Thats the reason?

    • Fanboys always talk about Empire being great. Did they just go for that mood? So the next one can have woks again?PhanLo

  • detritus1

    It was ok. I think.

Problem for me was I didn't eat all day then sped-drank two ciders and had a joint before I got in, then drank two more ciders whilst in there, went for three very long and bladder-destroying toilet sessions and raised my partner's significant capacity for ire.

One of the main characters had terrible CGI and there was quite a lot of unnecessary shop-horning of second-tier characters in, but what the hey, it's star wars and much more in line with the original trilogy, so all good here.

Agree with the points made above about who should've died and who shouldn't, but I'm not going to lie - I whooped internally when Leia did that ridiculous thing and during the bombing run and ... yeah, it was fun.

    .

What I REALLY liked was the return to ridiculo-tech - the idea of WW2-era physics at play on inter-stellar capacity space ships and stuff... I mean - a bombing run? Ships being out of reach of .. why? It's space ffs, not much out there to stop projectiles! :)

    • Oh, and whilst there was one too many attempts at humour, perhaps, I loved that interaction between Finn and Hux :)detritus
    • *shoe-horning, obviously... although with the obvious underpinning commercial reasons for their inclusion, perhaps shop-horning's not far off...detritus
    • lol @ridiculo-tech... I agree with you on thisOBBTKN
    • AT-ATs are the best example of this... all that antigrav and they build clumsy slow walkers. Didn't care when little though ha.fadein11
    • I agree with you on these. To be fair one of those characters having terrible CG was due to ... well timing!mugwart
    • I'm guessing it was all CG those parts or he/r make up artist needs more training!mugwart
    • and I liked Finn in this film.mugwart
    • ach't, I meant 'Poe and Hux' not Finn!detritus

.... Watched it. There is nothing better in the world in when a new edition to a film series that meant so much to you as a child and you get the chance to take your own kid whom is now a fan. Music started then the logo came up. Son hugged - it was a treasured moment...

That said TERRIBLE WRITING/ Directing, great film-making but fucking hell you could hear the Disney committee board members tear at what was an interesting idea.
I enjoyed the long length but fucking hell it was repetitive with the last minute saves.

So many major grips but main one was how they handled the political correctness. Should samurai's/ Jedi's be all white ... no, should they be of the universe (black, asian, female, of alien origin) fuck yeah of cause. Do I care, only with the quality of character arc. They were too busy ticking committee PC boxes that some characters whom happened to be were left lifeless.
Why cant they just be well written and why only the good side but all the baddies just White or Japanese. Come one.
The way the men were portrayed rolled my eyes. I don't see this in real life so why is it so hyped up on the screen?

Why are Rai and Kylo Ren so powerful compared to Luke and Darth?

Laura Dern - fuck yeah. Obvious death/ character arc but fuck yeah. A character that should have been left alive. Why couldnt a droid stay back?

I nearly cried when Disney wrote out my childhood hero in savior of that weak limp character Rai. Why ... the only reason I could think of was she was all powerful "female" (marked as PC not any feelings I have against females) she didn't need training cause she had a dream once ... cause those light sabers are so easy to wield ... Luke had depth, history and a life left to live. I really feel cheated.

Disney makes one off book ended films that for some reason are loved. Star Wars was a set of films that actually meant a damn to people. They have a life.

Luke was fucking bad arse and still needed.

The writing mirroring Empire was so obvious they even mocked it "...Salt" "they really hate that ship".

Chewee becoming vegan was funny -- those cute dodo's were not needed. Nor was ice bambi - fuck off Disney selling push toys.

I also found this instantly hypercritical, that evil arms dealer city looked incredibly like Cannes and the people stereotypical film makers. Cameo from Theroux made me think directly of Hollywood (his role in Mulholland Drive). But the rebels were fighting for the kiddies, to stop these evil slave drivers exploiting the kids... the same as Disney's sweat shops... left me dirty.

Smok was a joke, "I can read his mind". Jedi's can sense killing intent.

Star Wars was practically stolen from the greatest film maker of all time. The world benefited from it million fold. I didn't see film makers telling stories any more, I just see committees selling products and hypocrisy.

I sound so cynical. Where is the love of story telling? Making people laugh honestly not over sarcasm. Touching people's hearts with love, romance and above all humanity. Giving people a sense of wonder. This is a cooperate commitee making films. We are stuck with this director/writer for another 3 films. Can't we have Gareth Edwards?

Turned into a rant! VFX was great though ;-)

    • fuck that was a long rant! I'm a rather passionate fella!mugwart
    • You think Rey is a weak / limp character? Wow. Also, remember it still IS a kid's movie, so our adult grudges may just be out of timecolin_s
    • Curious about your criticisms of Johnson though; I thought his direction was spot on, if the writing was just a bit off / joke heavy at timescolin_s
    • The film had no voice. It felt more of a commitee around a war room arguing about toy sales.
There was no director. Rogue one had a director, it had a voice.
      mugwart
    • He directed the camera better than JJ. Acting was better than JJ. Jokes were off and not needed so much. It was more the events.mugwart
    • The fact it is a kids movie actually made me cry. There is no voice for children these days just sales. I found myself numb and very sad. I took my family tomugwart
    • the comic shop afterwards and felt the same there. Story telling is so pure and so essential to the human spirit. Comedy is about bullying different opinions.mugwart

I came out from the movies like this:
    - What the fuck I just paid for?
    - Loved the guy who shouted loud YOU FUCKING BITCH at the result of Rajs (yeah she is dumb as an indian goatherd) first wandering off.
    - Lots people teleportation and background changes without changing time or the scene.
    - Some of the characters don't belong there. Like at the beginning on the millennium falcon there is this alien in the background during the conversation what dominates the scene.
    - Only fucking space animals can define an alien planet?

annoying garbage if you have an eye for detail.
