but if you want my take on it, just let yourself react viscerally. you don't have to be an art expert-- your take is arguably valid no matter how ignorant of art thou art.
that said, spend more time looking at art and you'll 'get it' more. just like any other kind of art or music, abstract art makes more sense with more exposure.

Also...it's hard to understand modern art without context as most movements are a reaction to what can before. I highly recommend the book above as a primer...then you can move onto more specific texts on the modern.

There are so many different kinds of modern art, all with different ideas and influences behind it. There is not a single piece of knowledge that makes a lightbulb go off and suddenly you "understand" modern art.
