Relative to most professions, graphic design (YOUR own skills, that most people do not possess) can help change the world. Effectively designed propaganda with a clear simple message can motivate large groups people. Look at the Obama Hope posters, Russian propaganda, the posters from WW2 (We Want You, etc.). Even those long vertical infographics that people create can plant seeds into our minds. Most people won't read a report about climate change, but they will read one of those pretty infographics.
We have more power than you think. But we do commercial stuff to pay the bills of course... and that stuff doesn't have much impact.
