Design is art in commerce. In its purity it isn't, but that is a luxury. It's never dead, but it subject to trends. Pure aesthetic design is agnostic. It's not dead, but much harder to come by.

design died when companies started repositioning their designers at the bottom of their pyramid or the bottom of their ladder.
Design died when a paycheck from a crappy company looks better than your own design values, and wasting the rest of your life with them doing shit design for a shit company.
Design died when failure could not be turned into success.
