This ain’t something I use to vent a lot; I’m 15 days sober so far.
I was drinking too much beer. Daily. Started with a week, and then came another, and I’m feeling very energetic and proud of myself.
I usually used to think that I could handle a beer now and then, but I’m very addictive and shit. I feel good for being able to control it and to realizing it’s possible to stop and wonder.

28 years clean and sober today.
What a mothers day present that must have been. I was dumped on my parents front lawn because I was passed out and the guy I was drinking with didn't want me around anymore. I am giving her my 28 year medallion for mothers day this year.- Good on you lemmy, that's some dedication right there.BuddhaHat

not for nothin' but if the sort of sarcasm "i'm drunk now" posts could be kept to threads, well, about being drunk (as there's more than a few)... it'd be appreciated. there's enough pressure and difficulty in trying to be sober and when notype makes it a year just to get followed by sarcasm, it's not cool or funny.
- i don't care about shenanigans but this thread IS about people quitting drinking for real. respect.renderedred
- Oh gosh. It’s both funny and acceptable anywhere to make a joke like that anywhere . Get over it.monospaced

Bumping this ... because I don't know why.
I suppose I do - I'm at just over 4 months (again, was drinking the past couple years) and about to embark on at least 5 or 6 months working and traveling in Europe.
Anyone had experience being in foreign countries while sober? Not drinking the cheap/delicious wine over here is going to be terribly difficult. Pointers are welcome as without any friends/support groups/etc., it's a bit intimidating.
- I've also found drinking to be such a good way to quickly bond, the usual laundry list of "cons" are a bit more balanced by the "pros" now.colin_s
- Visit the Middle East instead?Nairn
- This might not the right time to not be drinking, how often in your life will you have this opportunity? If you can't control yourself and alcohol is destroyingzarkonite
- your life then don't drink. But think of all the missed opportunities and why you're not drinking?zarkonite
- How bad can it be? Ive had an armed escort out of Mexico while sober. If I told you what happened while sober in Fiji, you'd start drinking. I keep my trips...lemmy_k

Still going strong, at the gym 6x wkly (though can't get gains, LOL not sure why- 0 regimen?), running 3-4x wkly.
All that time I wasted in bars (solo, hoping to string connections) makes me want to tear up when I think of it. $5K saved up in 6.5 mos sent to dead Sallie Mae.
Things aren't all rainbows but certainly better than they were, even when I slowed down and thought it was in moderation. Moderation is not for me.
If anyone needs anything over the holidays. I'm here.
Going to be offline for a bit, see you all in 2019!

A fascinating book on addiction that among other things connects it to a dopamine (reward and pleasure neurotransmitter) deficiency caused by excess cortisol (stress hormone) passing from stressed mothers to their babies while in utero.
- +++ loved the personal histories
awesome book and very easy to understand, it's recommended for every single person here :)sted

A lot comes down to genetics or psychological position. There's plenty of credible research to indicate certain people are more prone to addiction.
Living in Lisbon for the past year with local wines as cheap as €1.49, it felt like an offence not to indulge and try all the wines.
I'm not prone to addiction, but after 10 months of wine, at least a small 10cl glass per day - I started to feel it's addictive attraction. Probably, since the brain has plasticity, I've over time, widened the pathway between alcohol = stress relief/feel good within the circuitry of my brain.
I'm lucky to not be easily addicted, so it was simple to stop. No wine for me for the past month, don't miss it. Feel overall better without it.
- the theory that more people are “prone” to addiction has definitely been debunked with science to back it up.notype
