if you are on a train in sleeper class, tuck your trousers into your socks. I once got rudely awoken by a mouse/rat running up my leg and then all over the inside of my clothing!! Needless to say it was a very amusing sight to everyone else... but usually you'll be sleeping up on a bunk, I was sitting down with my feet on the floor

Varanasi - epic cultural centre, India at it's most Indian - River Ganges etc
Hampi - Super chilled, beautiful, amazing temples everywhere, my personal favourite spot in India. Rock climbing too
Aranbol/Palolem Beach in Goa - Parties
Gokharna - A chilled version of Goa - more beautiful , less parties but still social
    Kerala - chilled waterway living
Pushkar - beautiful hippie vibe town where Gypsies live
Chittaurgh- lesser know destination, but has this unbelievable, massive fort that takes a full day to explore
    The Taj of course

Get some shots and pepto bismol before you go. Most of the westerner aren't used to the environments and diets there.

The South of India is not so much on the tourist track, and very beautiful, also random strangers are more likely to be really interesting to talk to than to try to hard-sell you something, which often happens in the northern tourst areas.... Pondicherry, as seen in the movie Life of Pi is actually what it does look like, but of course, more crowded and noisy....

My wife's family is from Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu, both very beautiful places to go.

You will either love or hate India, maybe even both emotions at the same time, the sensual volume of everything is turned waaay up, like sounds, smells, sights are sometimes overwhelming all at once, and yes, cities can be crowded and dusty. But the place is worth it, sometimes its so insanely beautiful and interesting.... then you turn around and step in a pile of water buffalo shit to remind yourself that yes, you are in India....

If you're a single guy traveling alone, and you don't mind a bit of rough traveling experiences, you can take trains all over the place in second class, I did, and I'm very glad I did, often the stops in the middle of nowhere were more intersting than all the lists of things I thought i was supposed to see. If you are female, traveling in India is very different, you probably want some people to travel with, as the hassle factor of strange guys can be waaay too much and burn you out, as a few friends told me.... and I was often traveling with a woman and guys hassled her even though I was right there... long not so fun story.....
