Rabbit, theoretically I think you are correct in a way.
Don't quote me on this if the music police ever come around your house and bust you, but I believe that if you do get caught for downloading music without paying for it you can claim that it is a "digital backup" of music that you have already purchased. But you would need to prove it by declaring your actual mp3/tape/cd/vinyl collection and have it compared to your illegalz downloadz

That's the justification I use for stealing my music back.

These days, most of the time , when you buy albums on vinyls, you'll receive a free digital version.
On the other hand, just rip your CD, problem solved.

I buy the cd and leave it on the shelve unopened, then download the digital copy...

This is a feature of amazon UK if you buy a CD from them then you automatically have the option to download the MP3 version as well. However I don't really think it should be a given that you get the mp3 version. Simply because it is a different format and it takes time to encode and it takes space on a disc and it takes money to provide the service to download it. Imagine if a client said hey Thanks for the animation on that BLU ray it looks really good, now give me the mp4 version of it.
- Blu-rays often come with an mp4 version and more... just sayin'monospaced
- Not the ones I provide for people, you want an mp4 version that's more money.chossy
- I meant retail films, from movie studios, like Disney and such.monospaced

You pay for the rights to listen to a music via a specific medium.
Unless explicitly stated, this hasn't traditionally given you the rights to same music, via another technology.
They've changed this over the past few years, both in terms of license and government legislation (at least in terms of removing the default position of it being illegal), but it all boils down to a case by case rights issue.
