I'm moving back to NJ to buy a house simply b/c I cannot afford property in NYC or surrounding burroughs and those available are shit. Also, the sales tax is a killer not to mention city/state tax. Pinkfloyd mentioned how difficult it is to try and go to movies, grocery shopping, or any other activity - it's just a pain it the ass. And yes, the produce and food in general is typically expired or of a lower quality. Most stores/bodegas will try to charge me more and more $ for the same product if I happen to frequent more than once in a week. Fuck this...
Most transplants are so mesmerized by the tall buildings that they cannot get out of the fucking way or off their cell phones and they are the ones paying extra for property and good causing all the prices to go up. I have a fantastic job but I'm moving to Jersey and I'll take the bus for 1 hour into the city, it takes me close to 45min anyway to take the train in from Brooklyn so why the fuck not.
I'll make my money here and go home where there are trees, politeness, less stress, and more honest people.
- totally, when I am ready for a real house, I'm heading outta manhattanmonospaced

i think it all depends on what makes you happy. i'm looking forward to moving to new york next year, but when i was 22 i turned down a job there because it just wasn't right for me at the time. (now 31.)
but i mean, if you want space, or something other than anonymity, it's probably not the place for you. then again, i'm coming at this as an outsider, but i dunno. aren't new yorkers generally unhappy anyway?
you could probably get a survey of how happy residents of arizona or florida are, but would you trust that shit?

I love it here and plan to never leave. However, my gf and I don't plan on having children and don't have the urge to buy a house and live in the burbs. I grew up that way and it's out of my system.

When you repeatedly call yourself "the greatest city in the world", it just means you're trying to justify crappiness.
- It's not New Yorkers who say that repeatedly by the waymonospaced
- It's also the people headed to new york who are held in the gravitational pull of it's populationcannonball1978

I am NYC, I seen it all, the changes. I'm old enough to be your papa for the lot of you...

- aspects of it I like, some things I Love but in retrospect from the big picture, No.yurimon
- I try to get out of the city as much as possible. Learn from the rich who are happy to be in the city.yurimon
- If you do live here have a house in the mountains or by the beach.yurimon
- The energy of the city is for the young and foolish. Its become a meat market for the most part. So many choices reflects in the flakiness of the current youthyurimon

I once met a weed dealer who was putting himself through law school. even though I was not a smoker. I hung out. it was a bodega with expired food on the shelves he was more of delivery guy. 1 block from a police station. He bragged on police protection. 1 month later place was busted. never seen him after. 1 month later around the corner a fancy pizza joint opened up by italians. Something fishy cause there was full counter display of every pizza imaginable but not much clientele in an area coming back from the crack era... Then the answer came. The delivery boy had an expensive lexis with $1k rims and gold teeth... 1+2=I ♥ NY

I lived in NYC for 17 years.
Truth is the city needs more guys like you - white Americans who's information come from the movies. White so that you have a well paying job and the landlord doesn't feel bad about overcharging you on rent; American so that you don't have immigrant connections (that cut the rent by 1/3 to 1/2); and uninformed so that you go straight for what NYC is not - Manhattan - the city you know from the movies. After sometime in NYC you realize that Manhattan is a ghetto of overprices bodegas and premium priced but mediocre quality restaurants and move to the real New York: Brooklyn or Queens (also the Bronx). Then, since by now you know an immigrant or two you get an immigrant hookup on your rent and start living well as your rent is cheap (around 1k-1.5k), your local bodega is cheap (about 50-70% less than Manhattan), the good is delicious and semi-cheap and you still have this nice white-American well paying job.
- You also live in an immigrant apartment that never gets repaired.cannonball1978
- (writing from the never-repaired apt which has its walls renovated s we speak...)pr2

Agree with pr2, I lived here for seven years. I just moved to a neighborhood in Brooklyn which is so far away from what's been described in this thread earlier that it sounds like two completely different worlds.
It's expensive yes, but so are all other major cities in the world and in comparison, you get a better bang for your buck (rent excluded) then anywhere else.
Yes, working a corporate gig in Midtown probably sucks dick but if you can make a good income from your freelance work regardless of field there's no better place to live.
