ideally I need this setup to be portable - hence the Drobo Mini. I know it's pricey but I can't find an alternative atm

I'm currently trying to find an option to use an SSD as an external boot drive for iMac's and Mac Pro's when out.
BUT, I need to find a non thunderbolt setup sadly...firewire? can you get external FW SATA Enclosures? (heads to ebay) and FW is fastrer than USB 2 right?

I have a friend who has had quite a few issues with his Drobo.. had to pay quite a bit to recover data, as it has a proprietary format.

Speeds up to...
Ports
TB = 1250MBps
USB3.1 = 1250MBps
ESATA = 375MBps
USB3 = 625MBps
FW800 = 100MBpsDrive types
Newer SATAIII SSDs ~500MBps
SATAII SSD ~250MBps
Standard 7200 Drives around ~90-120MBps
PCIe drives ~600-2000MBpsRaided - ... too complicated and expensive for my needs..
- Where you get them figures from? cos everywhere I've looked says otherwise esp with FW800sem
- wikipedia and wolfram alpha to convert gbps and mbps to MBps... and drive types from neweggdeathboy
- of course those are the possibility. if you put a SSD on a usb2.0 port you will see 460mpbs or 57.5MBpsdeathboy
- really all about knowing how fast it can transfer and making sure their isnt a bottleneckdeathboy
- lots of people will get a new sataIII SSD and put it on a sataII connector and know no better theyre not seeing the full potential of the SSDdeathboy
- potential of the SSD. and if they benchmarked they will see less numbers than advertiseddeathboy

If you want external SATA you can do that with a PC.

Bump. I want to have an external SSD with Thunderbolt, but they are very expensive.
I know it's possible to put an SSD into a separate Thunderbolt HD enclosure, but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

That drobo Mini looks like the best option.
