Any recommendations?
I am mac generally so not sure whats out there these days and laptop is useful now and again as its super lightweight and battery lasts forever. Why did I feel the need to justify my use of Windows?

bleh, just buy Sublime Text.
Notepad++ is fine, but it suffers a couple of irritating prefs crash problems (for me, at least), which periodically resets all the changes you've made to it.

Sublime Text, end of thread.
You can download it and use it forever it just nags every now and then about buying it you want to try it.

For what language(s)? For php, css, ruby,js, and other web shit, I'd go with Aptana. A few little annoying quirks, but really good overall. Better than Notepad++.
For C++, I like Code::Blocks.

I've used
http://textpad.com
since the early 00s - I wish it had context-available code snippets and the like, but I'm so used to it, it's kind of invisible to me.

- Going to try this on a project vs sublime and see if I like it.ArmandoEstrada

Sublime is my personal Fave, so many features, so fast and can be used for an unlimited period of time on an evaluation trial.

Thanks for all the recommendations - brackets.io is the clear winner for my requirements. Great little editor.

Been trying out Brackets this week. It's similar to Sublime but it's FREE. Some extensions are pretty much the same and the screen split modes are cool.

Look no further than Atom (by Github). Brackets was pretty decent too, but Atom felt better to me. The library of add-ons is getting bigger by the day as well.
For compiled languages, Code::Blocks is pretty decent. Anything but piece of horse shit Visual Studio.
- Been meaning to try it out, some of the devs I work with claim it is great.BabySnakes

I'm also pushing myself to learn VIM.
The learning curve is awful, there's nothing like it, BUT they say it's super productive once you're past the basics.Makes you look smart too, lol....
