20% is the norm here in Philly for good food/service (think I just read an article on how Philly is one of the best tipping cities). Yeah, take-out gets a tip too, perhaps not as much. However, I have a Chinese Food take-out place around here, always tip 20%. Shit is done in like 10-minutes, they're super-friendly, know you by name, the register person actually speaks English correctly, and is always super tasty, way better than others (can't let places like that go down since it's so small, super hard to find).

^^ totally fine with that (although I find 15/20% way too high for tips),
but do you always tip at random places where the service is just ok, where you don't give a shit or where you just took a cup of coffee/ grabbed a sandwich?

You are suckers for your own guilt and paranoia of being chased out of the restaurant.
Waitstaff don't deserve tips. They deserve to be paid fairly.
Don't pass that off to the customer.
