5-7 K is decent. 10 k or higher sounds extreme to me.

don't know what's the brief or how many rounds you expect. i would nail that down as illustration revisions can be time consuming.
$10k doesn't sound unreasonable to me, especially if it's a "smallish" medical firm.
buyout meaning you're giving them full use forever? i would rethink that perhaps.
- buyout = unlimited, forever. 1rd sketch revision, 2rds final revisions.becca2

if it's branding then the buyout is somewhat assumed. nobody does limited branding.
the pricing is probably right. depends on the market and how the job came to your "friend". maybe split the difference, ask 8.5?
it's all funny money anyway. they're doctors so they can afford it. but they could also go online and have somebody in a 3rd world whip one up for $50.
- agreed.becca2
- it's not always assumed, you could be screwing yourself if you are assuming it. i always put a time limit on it.doesnotexist
- Buyout has been defined with client.becca2

Agree with dope...5-7 is a fine place to land, but based on my experience, your friend could expect them to balk. With the plethora of RF assets available these days, clients don't have an appreciation for "buy-out" usage when it comes to illustration.
10 will (and should) scare them off.

Becca2,
branding guidelines and a full stationery system would be the obvious upsell. i'm assuming that's not already inclusive in the bid. and people like options.
- Yes, but friend is an illustrator, not a designer.becca2
- yes but the illustration is really a "design". It's part of the rest of the bigger thing. Opportunity. Farm it out if he can't do it.MrAbominable
