I wrote and directed a short film in 2004 for a college project and found the file on a CD today. I was excited to watch it but got this message. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
I can't copy it to my desktop or open it in Quicktime and it is a MOV. file. I hope I can keep the file alive somehow but don't know what to do.

Try creating a DMG file and mount that?

Found this:
Error -36 basically equates to an I/O error, but it should be interpreted in context.
- In some cases the error is symptomatic of bad media. If the error occurs whilst copying from one hard disk to another, then you probably do have bad media.
- In some cases, I/O is properly restricted. I vaguely recall seeing -36 a few weeks ago, whilst using Finder to backup protected DVDs.Probably the CD is busted, try reading it on another computer...

Try a older machine that has a old OS on it?
Just thinking out loud....

Fuck, sounds like I might of lost it then. It was created in 04...
The video was about a student seducing a teacher to get a good grade and had a soundtrack with DIO and the song from Fast Times at Ridgemont High pool scene w/Phoebe Cates.
The best part is it was all mocking our Film Teacher who was having relations with a student..So my idea was to mock that and then see his reaction when I presented the film.

- Old "legacy" codecs such as Apple Animation require conversion. At least it's automatic.evilpeacock
- However, if you've got some funky non-standard Divx or other codecs wrapped in a .mov it may not work with QT current.evilpeacock
- In those cases the files may play with something like VLC or MPlayer, but good luck trying to do any editing or conversion.evilpeacock
- Basically, using proprietary codecs is a dead end. Always keep "masters" of important files, and transcode to modern lossless codecs when available.evilpeacock

what codec was used to make those files? .mov is just a wrapper, not a format, you may need Pro Video Codecs if you didn't yet installed any pro apps.
try with this:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1…- Playback of "pro" codecs is included in all MacOS versions. Encoding requires bigger tools though.evilpeacock

ESKEMA
I think that's it, but everything went well until I got this message "Pro Video Formats can't be installed on this disk, No qualifying copies of Final Cut Pro, Motion or Compressor were found"

so it looks like the previews are gone only for png files with alpha channel, anyone knows a way to fix this?
I installed vlc and it's still the same- Not sure what you mean; QT movies with alpha channels preview just fine (Quicklook). It's a bit hard to see, also seems to vary if straight or premultiplied.evilpeacock
- Had a thought: if you're using the Animation codec w/alpha and expecting previews then that's your problem. That codec was replaced with ProRes 4444.evilpeacock
- ProRes 4444 kicks Animation's ass. You should transcode all Animation files to it ASAP.evilpeacock

thanks for responding man, I appreciate the help, perhaps I'm misunderstanding you but it seems like you are set on me expecting something that does not exist.Just a bit of background here, on this same computer all that I'm asking for was possible 2 days ago (before I formatted and did a clean install), transcoding files was never an option, just let's get out of the way. Prores might work for most standard setups, but that's not what I need these for.
I just need help trying to figure out what am I missing now that I had before I formatted my laptop and that still works on my desktop, that's all I need at the moment.
:)
- If you ever had Perian installed for dealing with non-standard videos, that would be one of the causes for this.evilpeacock
- Also, keeping the old Quicktime 7.6.6 Player around is a workaround for opening "legacy" codec files. https://support.appl…evilpeacock
- You can re-install Perian and see if that helps, but it *will* cause other issues since it's long since been abandoned. https://www.perian.o…evilpeacock

put all your codecs (blabla.component) in ~/System/Library/QuickTime/
restart QT
(don't put them in ~/Library/QuickTime, where imovie,fcp,... put their components)
