In younger grades, bullies were tough. Although I was not the victim of bullying, I must admit that if I saw it happening I was too big of a pussy to say anything to the bully.
However, I smartened up by high school and knew that bullies were insecure and would never do anything, if confronted. We had a few big, dumb bullies. (The big+smart kids didn't bully, just the dumber ones). They'd pick on the nerdy kids, and when I'd see it happening, I'd make sure to cause a big scene and embarrass the bully. It's pretty easy to pinpoint the insecurities of a bully and then point them out to everyone around. I had a knack for embarrassing the shit out of these goons. I also had the benefit of being popular enough that it was easy to stick up for the victims of bullying.
Years later I realized that I probably hurt the bullies' feelings, and you could say that I was bullying the bullies. But, they were being dicks and needed to be put in their place.

as a youth i wasn't bullied. but as an adult, actually the last place i worked at part time as an in-house designer, i was bullied by the developer. he would say things to intimidate me (and certainly spoke about my sexuality behind my back-- i found out last year)

My high school had a tradition of "Frosh Week" like in Dazed and Confused, but it was the first week of school each year. The school staff and local police tried to stop it, but it would always take more than a week for the freshmen to realize they didn't have to put up with it. Each year a rumour would get spread that if you told a teacher you would also be suspended or expelled for participating. You'd think any kid would be smart enough to know better than to believe the rumour, but nobody would ever tell on anyone.
The froshing was usually no big deal (ass paddlings, a little slapping around) but sometimes got so far out of hand. The senior bullies were always taking it too far. One day I saw a guy completely naked, taped to a flag pole about 30 feet in the air with no way down. He had tape on his mouth so he was up there for a while. Sometimes kids would get thrown in a car, blindfolded and driven out into the country side and just left out there with no phone or anything. Once some bullies tied a freshman to their car and drove around, expecting him to run behind it. He couldn't keep up, fell, got all fucked up and broke some bones. Still, he was too scared to tell the police who did it.
Anyway, it was pretty common to see kids walking through the hall that had just been froshed. They were so sad, sometimes crying. Totally fucking defeated, on the first week of high school. So, I really made a point of talking to those kids after. Like, "Hey, kid, don't let them get to you. It's over, and if you take it like a man, you'll be fine." Then we'd tell them about a party or get some girls to hang out with them or something to try to make them feel cool.
I learned then that simply being nice to someone at just the right time can be a pretty powerful thing.
Whoa, writing this story out made me realize I was basically the one dude from Dazed and Confused. Hahahahahaha

Some tried to bullied me but I was the kind of person to accumulate and one day, out of no where, i reacted.
I violently cross-checked a dude in the rib-cage with my hockey stick once, he was making fun of me since a few games. I could have break some of his bone. He was in pain for a couple days. He never made fun of me afterward.
Another dude made fun of me at the park during a few game of baseball; suddenly i reacted with so much violence in my words and my eyes, he stopped making fun of me afterward. I just told him "The next time you say something, I will crush you" i didnt scream or anything, but it was so intense, he frozed in fear knowing I would totally do it.

Much more awareness around bullying nowadays. Wasn't bullied myself and my kids haven't been exposed to it. Just hoping it stays that way.

I used to get pushed around a lot and picked on because I was always a lot taller than everyone in my year.
So I made friends with the older kids who were much tougher. I didn't really get bullied after that.
But ... who knows really what effects that any kind of bullying really has on your self esteem many years later in life.

Not personally. It almost certainly apparent that it creates major issues in later life, I agree.
I don't imagine many policeman had a fun time in school, for example.

I'm wondering if childhood bullying can lead to anxiety issues later in life, and how to overcome them.

Better aplogize or....

@pinkfloyd .. In my attempt at amateur psychology, I would say that any form of bullying in younger years would form an opinion in your head of who you are.
For example, you aren't good enough, handsome enough, tough enough, skilled enough etc etc
Those messages dig in deep and seem to form your self perception throughout your life.
So the only way I can see of overcoming them is to have a higher level of self perception and be able to kind of reprogramme yourself with a new set of messages and thoughts from people that really care about your well being.

I got shoved once because the class bully thought I was going to tell on him for something I didn't even know about, or some stupid grade 5 crap like that.

All the bullies I had trouble with came from broken homes or their parents were known to be crazy white-trash or alcoholics.
Happy kids are nice kids. Unhappy kids find a way to make themselves feel better.

There was a time in 2001 when I avoided a fight because I thought there was real danger of death at the time. He said some things that were really offensive, and I guess maybe I never forgave myself for that. I usually try to avoid fights.
I was also picked on in childhood, but on the otherside I bullied people as well.

some people's lives peak in high school. some don't peak until their 30s. picasso kept peaking until his 80s. some even never peak.
