We have just had a call about a new project but they are insisting that we use Freehand MX.
We are all on brand new macs running 10.9 etc and CS6 and CC...
Can you import files?
Im sure we used to have Freehand MX but I doubt it would work on the latest macs...
Any advice please?
Thanks

tell them to stop living in 2006
also.. Freehand does not work with Mac OS X 10.6 or higher.

Illustrator can import Freehand files, but doesn't export.
I think you can't install it on those machines, but maybe someone will come in and say otherwise..Why do they care what you use? Do you have to collaborate with the files? That doesn't make much sense. Tell them to fuck off, Freehand is an 11 year old software ffs, as much as you love it (I loved it) it's fuckin dead.

Perhaps they are trolling?

i am still using freehand mx
my workaround:

Ill tell them to stick their $30,000 two month project up their ass then...

Since when does a client tell you what software to use?

If the project is worth it to you to find a work around like typist suggested than go for it. If you have enough work coming in to tell them to fuck right off than do so. If I were freelancing and couldn't afford to turn it down I would, in order:
- Ask them to explain why this is an important requirement.
- Explain that a project like this is the perfect opportunity to modernize, and that to continually support legacy software will only incur more costs down the road.
- If they persist, inform them that there will be an additional fee in order to support this requirement. Explaining why shouldn't be difficult.

Be gently inquisitive... it could be this Freehand MX requirement was cut-pasted from something in a proposal a few years old by somebody who may not know what they're asking....
....and/or they want to be re-assured that text updates won't cost a fortune, and since they have Freehand MX, that's what they assume you may have...
@jtb26 is right

Just to clarify they aren't 'telling us' to us Freehand.
The original files ARE in Freehand and we need to be able to open them up - simple as.
By the looks of it - we can do this in CS 5.1, save it as a AI and supply it back in any version WE like.
Problem is, I don't think grads and drop shadows etc come through in the conversion process...
- How many gradients and drop shadows are we talking here? Can they be documented and re-created?brandon_phillip
- Possibly yes but there are 200 packs that needs to be edited...nylon

Maybe you can find a copy on hotline.

OK, so what I would do is find an older mac, lying around, a friends, something that can have FH installed and open the files there, verify what the conversion is doing. If it's fucking things up, try to export to AI from FH and see what happens. Do you need to edit those files or just use them (place it's contents)?

OK so I believe this is sorted.
I now just need to get a CS4 installer.
I have a legit serial number but the CD's in alas in another country...
Anyone know where I can download one from as Adobe do not support this anymore :(
