vir2l was probably the first thing that made me think the web could be cool, and got me into Flash. Maybe 1999? That site was so cool for that time; all the perspective futuristic space looking stuff.

H74 was also really inspiring, when it was called holodeck74.

To brag: did my first page, for a subdivision of the telecomm giant that provided internet where I lived then, in 93 or 94.
But those weren't "the good old days".
Java, ugh, javascript added some to the canvas. But I don't think it was until someone decided to, ahem, think outside the box with flash that the whole thing took of.
Maybe gabocorp started it? idk. 97ish?
Then, going from "hi-techy" to actually designing by and for designers or, let's say creatives, I'd say places like Paregos were one of the people at the forefront.
Many may remember their skyscraper, but does anyone remember Mosquito, the site a couple of years before that? 98-99?

I remember Nike's Art of Speed & Diesel's Delight commissions as the pinnacle (and probably beginning of the end) of the type of work that was done back then.
