everything is an advert

major point: these don't just block ads. check out how many data trackers/beacons/widgets that Ghostery blocks for example. You can also add your own blacklist with the router-based techniques.
Most people are naive (or don't care) about massive amounts of personally identifiable data being collected, traded and **sold** behind their backs. Someday, some company is going to offer up an aggregate display of that data and people are going to piss themselves.

The last bit of the report mentions the possibility of lawsuits from advertisers. WTF?! On what basis could they possibly sue this guy?

I like ads. Always learning something new

Blocks your entire computer from accessing the ad servers at all.
No ads in YouTube etc.

Just tried Ghostery...it's awesome so far. Thanks.

That's the free market in action isn't it? If someone invents a technology where you don't have to view ads, then of course people will block them. In the long run maybe it will lead to ad companies adapting and using different approach than simply banner ads and popups.
Also last time I checked internet isn't free anyway, everyone pays for internet usage. All ads do is support a particular business model used by some websites.

nothing is free.

Suppose everyone eliminated internet ads? The free internet would disappear. Come on, people! Without freedom, we lose democracy!
- the internet existed before adshotroddy
- true enough. but it's not the internet you expect to experience now. the one I expect.prophetone

thx Jules!
it looks like disconnect is blocking a lot more than Ghostery and the others

Most times you wouldn't even notice. It's just a cleaner content page.
it uses a 1x1 trans pixel replacement. 9/10 times the space collapses down, and maybe that 1/10th time it's just a blank horizontal space. or unnoticeable column spacethat's only one of the methods, though

so like you nuke ads and stare at a page with empty holes in it instead?

you could also install DDWRT, or Tomato on your own router if your router supports it. (or check for the other prebuilt routers like Buffalo, I think)
then install your own flavor of ad-blocker on it. like this one: http://www.howtogeek.com/51477/h…
It's different than the browser plugins (like Ghostery or AdBlock) since it covers your entire internal network of machines (laptops, phones, ipads etc). Still great to use Ghostery and AdBlock too.

AdBlock Plus in Chrome block 98.99999% of all ads.
- How do the other 1.1% get through? Will til the other 98.9% figure it out.CygnusZero4

adblock has an 'allow unintrusive ads option' that allows google ads and other things like ads on reddit and facebook which are deemed 'unintrusive'. just un select it. my guess is if adblock starts providing their own ads they will be apart of the 'unintrusive' variety and will be blocked if you don't want them.
- Adblock Plus that is not to be confused with Adblockuuuuuu

I enjoy what AdBlock does for me. I think they're going to be running their own ads through it soon...
- That's fucking shitty conduct if they do. If one uses a service, one should support it as that service asks.detritus
- yeah iunno, i read it somewhere the other day. does sound shitty.doesnotexist

Sure and Google will pay them to unblock only their stuff like they did with AdBlock
