the annuals are usually in that path, or a graphic novel after a strong run on an on-going storyline can also have that sort of idea.

Definitely! Been reading a couple graphic novels lately - kind of had me thinking about this idea. There are a few books - look to be decent - but was just wondering/asking for first-hand recommendations from those on here into that kind of thing.

Miracle Man is Allan Moore's take on Superman. Only Miracle Man is as intelligent as he is invulnerable, and he brings humanity into a new age. Lots of references to concepts from Nietzsche. Has some chapters by Neil Gaiman too. It's not in print due to some copyright dispute, but you can download it on bittorrent. AKA Marvel Man.

Old Man Logan is a nice take on wolverine. It's probably one of the deepest character studies of that particular character. Sick artwork as well.
http://www.amazon.com/Wolverine-…Red Son is an interesting story about superman if he landed in Russia instead of the US. What his mindset would be regarding communism, propaganda...
http://www.amazon.com/Superman-R…The film Chronicle was a nice take on the superhero film/story. Instead of some kid who's uncle died and they end up saving the world - the film deals with teenage angst in a more realistic, teenagers can be dicks kind of way.
The director was very influenced from Akira (old anime from 80s).
A lot of tension and actually really well done film written by John Landis's son.
