There's this expression in Portuguese (no matter if from Brazil or Portugal):"Vá-se catar!"

To the argument of "Brasil would have those problems with or without the world cup"
yes, that is correct. However, people are not protesting for the problems before the worldcup. Brasilians are pissed because they see all the money being spent on things that are NOT all these problems that they had before the event.
That is why they are complaining, and that is why both, economic problems and money spent on the cup instead of other things are EXTREMELY related.
Basically, It's like this:
Add to that, all the police killings and slums being emptied and moved (not everyone in the slum is a thief or criminal). It's all related.

If you happen to be one of the few that enjoy a life above average, of course it won't matter. Hey, lets get a couple of tickets and go see some of the games at the new stadium.
And then, you could say, well, tourism will bring the locals revenue and all that, but these organizations have a big team of lawyers and they copyright everything, so locals don't really make much more than the usual day. If you want to sell anything with the world cup logo, you are going to have to pay to fifa for that too. I mean yeah, I don't care for sports and I'm sure I would still watch a couple of games here and there if my country gets far enough to be interesting.
But you have to be able to see it from the side of the locals too. Police moving you out of the way because you are not part of the the 'pretty image' that the tv wants to show. And you are being forced out of your own home at gun point... come on man.. that has to suck no matter what side you are on.

We understand why they are complaining, but then again they VOTED for those in power running the show, so in the end the tragedy is on them.
- I can't believe you just wrote that.oey
- But you know I'm righternexbcn
- they didn't for this shit they voted in good faith to have the politicians represent their interests.uuuuuu
- *vote... for this shituuuuuu
- obviously evicting people en mass at gun point to make way for parking lots and trains for tourists is not their interestsuuuuuu
- obviously frittering away hundreds of millions in bribes, politician payouts and stadiums is not what they voted foruuuuuu

Rio Violence Spikes Ahead of World Cup

I almost wrote that in Venezuela people also voted for it.
But lets keep the cool here please and try not to mix stuff, be simplistic, generalize, irrational, egoistically ignorant and other neanderthal bullshit.
Everybody knows everything is Platini's fault!
