When I was that age, my parents sometimes bought us (my twin and I) regular plastic toys, but my uncle and grandfather gave us things like rope and wood and tools so that we could build things in the back yard. To this day that's all I remember, and building things taught us a ton about physics and such. I know it's weird, but it might be worth it, especially for a 6-yr-old boy.

Tools in a tool box. No sharp stuff, just hammer, saw, tape-measure. etc.
