Anyone here deal with a HUGE spike in traffic for a wordpress site?
I'm tasked with dealing with some HUGE traffic spikes, at predictable times in the future, for a WP site ... traffic spike will last about 3 hours, then level off slowly for a day or two, then back to normal....
In the past, we had a small script that took all the WP pages and wrote out flat HTML pages so server could bypass PHP engine when serving pages...that worked okay, images were slow, so we used cloudflare to deal with images, js,css,etc.......
a bit of research indicates people use amazon, cloudflare, cloudfront,etc...
...Then we used a few WP caching plug-ins that didn't work so well as the "flat HTML" rendering method...
Anyone have a better experience / soluition? we're on a VPN host that's fairly cooperative and not a "shared host" etc....
Note that we do NOT do comments, that's done on a 3rd party, so we don't have to login users, just update content, and a few minutes delay of rendering HTML pages is ok... but not a few hours...

Ha - I'm configuration the W3 Cache Plugin right now and learning about this stuff as well.

How much traffic are you talking about? I was managing a Wordpress install that was easily getting more 100-200K uniques a day with no issues. It was running with on the Thesis Framework with SuperCache plugin if I remember. It was hosted in a top class datacenter, but I don't even think it was a running on a dedicated server.

it's not so many hits per day as it is a SHIT TON at exactly 1 minute or so.... lots of PR and news/social media/etc announce a major announcement at an exact time, we get a huge spike for 1 minute... 10,000 attempted connections within 5 minutes or something like that....then an hour or so later, it's pretty much back to normal....

also note that there are various ways to edge-cache, but we have an odd requirement that we have to NOT allow anyone to see the content before it goes live... at exactly the right time, so the pre-caching methods of many CDN's are not quite built with that assumption...
