Sinking of the Belgrano, killing surrendering soldiers was a low point... and "execute every last one of them" in the Iranian hostage crisis was another... and Pinochet... apartheid... polltax... miners strike... the list is too long to feel anything other than repulsion for the woman... oops I forgot Ireland.
- Belgrano was surrendering was it? Where do you fools pull this shit from?detritus
- I actually agree that the Belgrano should have been sunk. It was a war and a threat to British lives.qTime
- As for the Iranian hostage crisis, this is how you deal with people who hold British lives hostage. This has more to do with the SAS.qTime
- totally, qT - the 200 mile exclusion zone was a guide for the rest of the int'l community - not a get-out clausedetritus
- for the argentinian military to take advantage of. It was war - they declared it, fuck them.detritus
- it was retreating and was sunk - fact. read any account of it.
I think you will find most of the hostages in the iranian embassy were not britishfadein11 - embassy were not britishfadein11
- if by retreating you mean 'moving away', then yes - but don't conflate the meanings in the war context.detritus
- moving away from a battle = retreating = no longer a threat. read the geneva conventionfadein11
- it was actually zig zagging in and out. It was a ship that they wanted to use to kill British lives.qTime

I read an article on the BBC yesterday, not in any way sticking up for her, but merely saying what evidence have we got to say a different government would have done things differently? A lot of the decisions were brought on by global and society changes. I think the 80s were a massive changing point around the world but after seeing my family ripped to bits by miners strikes, pit closures and relentless privatisation, from my experience it wasn't a good period for the UK. The bigger picture is we're all pretty much fucked though right? With most economies based upon peak oil and gold prices and the environment isn't going to get better, over population, debt and ridiculous consumerist nations doesn't look so promising to me. Maybe Thatcher started all this?! and Maybe Fucking Obama has too many hands up his arse to change anything.
- Yup, this, this and exactly this.
But hey, it's much easier to blame an individual.detritus - I suppose ultimately, that's all democracy is about - having someone to blame for our collective ills.detritus
- The thing is anyone who wants to be a head of state or other politician is agreeing to take that responsibility on themselves just by doing the job.Continuity
- ... by doing that job.Continuity
- Worth noting any 80s government wd have had the benefit of North Sea Oil revenue...NonEntity
- Tories made much capital (so to speak) of their fiscal nous but were lucky with timingNonEntity

I do sometimes wonder with some people.
She won 3 general elections. 2 with huge majorities. No one put a gun to the head of 65% of people in this country.
- Yo, screw YOU
and your logic!!!
:)GeorgesIV - you fuckwitfadein11
- One election after the worst socialist government in modern history. The Tories were always going to win that.Wolfboy
- One election after a victorious war campaign. She had a 25% approval before the Falklands so she called a snap election after.Wolfboy
- Then 1987 was the start of the Labour rebuild, but their vote was definitely split with the SDP.Wolfboy
- @wolfboy - well putfadein11
- beware! the voters per district ratio in the south was much different than the north....vaxorcist
- Yo, screw YOU

The country was on its arse so she stepped in and spat on it.
- on it or in it?GeorgesIV
- either actually :)fadein11
- The country is still on it's arse. What's changed?Ianbolton
- not a lot - the deregulation of the banking system by her has a lot to answer for thatfadein11
- Really? Or did that help us compete again in the global markets? Who knowsIanbolton
- ridiculous banking practices caused the last recession and they wouldnt have happened wihtout deregulation put in place by herfadein11
- place by her...fadein11

nice article by Russell Brand (surprisingly good, to a child of the 80s like me):

The funny thing is both left and right have pretty much continued the Reagan/Thatcher policies. People call the Democrats socialist when economically speaking they have adopted the same neoliberal policies as Reagan (although more left on social stuff obviously). Probably the same can be said of Blair and "new Labour" in the UK

Fucking Obama said something nice about her...
Freedom whatever...
Seriously Obama, ask to leave and go take a fucking dump.
And some people say obama's a communist from other planet...- no matter what O says, some people will call him a communist nazi whatever...vaxorcist
- heh, folks use hatred of thatcher to prove they're socialist. OB obvs trying the reverse.kingsteven

The fact that Thatcher died peacefully, in old age, makes me really doubt the existence of karma...

Here's hoping more conservatives quickly follow her to the grave.

An Irish minister has criticised Gerry Adams for his comments about Lady Thatcher. My colleague Henry McDonald has sent me this.
Ireland's Justice Minister sharply criticised Gerry Adams today over his remarks had caused a great deal of hurt to the Irish people.
Alan Shatter said Adams should remember that the Provisional IRA caused a great deal of hurt during the Troubles.
Speaking in Dubin this morning, Shatter said: I think those who comment critically on Margaret Thatcher, in particular those in Sinn Féin who do so, shouldn't be allowed to forget that they were directly responsible, and the Provisional IRA, were responsible for a murderous bombing of a Conservative Party conference that resulted in the death of a number of people."

Don't know much about her but I think a dead person does at least deserve a 'RIP' in the title, as all other RIP-Threads.
- Why?qTime
- inform yourself first. without comparison, did Hitler or Stalin deserve a RIP?oey
- thatcher = hitler or stalin now?
huh.detritus - don't do that detritus, I wrote: "without comparison". so seriously, don't imply that i meant something that I didn't even say.oey
- even say. I was just picking his part of "i think a dead person does at least deserve a 'RIP'"oey
- that's how politicians argue or people that don't even listen when others speak. not niceoey
- Do i mean by this detritus=stupid?
no i don't. will you read it that way? it's up to you. hope not.oey - Dudes, come down. Someone died. So we say RIP. Because thats what you do. She didn't kill someone, right?mekk
- She killed many people mekk.Wolfboy
- all those men on the Belgrano, any young person who committed suicide due to Section 28...Wolfboy
- ...any old person who has died of cold because of the cost of heating while the companies are in profit since selling off the utilities.Wolfboy
- Thatcher does not deserve a RIP. She deserves to rot in hell, if there is such a thing.Continuity
- Yep, didn't even consider typing RIP. Thatcher's death is kinda like an anarchist meme. achieving immortality whilst boiling in milkkingsteven

You know the whole Gerry Adams IRA thing gets on my nerves these days. It's like the whole thing never happened.
I grew up in Preston and Warrington and come from Galway, so im well qualified to comment having been surrounded by bombs going off all over the north west. Spent most of my time being beaten up as a kid in school for being a terrorist :)
To quote him strikes me as odd and all the papers did yesterday.
"Murdering terrorist cunt gerry adams didnt like it when thatcher went after him." He wasn't a freedom fighter, just a thug much like most of his mates.
Funny how the IRA more or less disappeared overnight after 9/11. Somehow their main source of funding being east coast Irish groups in the USA, didn't think it would be that smart to fund a terrorist organisation
Irony is that Irish americans still laud him, but as an Irish Briton so to speak I despise that bloke.
It one of the things she got absolutely spot on. "We'll talk when you renounce violence"
- +1, it's hypocritical for either side to lay the blame t the feet of the others - shit was centuries of festering..detritus
- ..which is to say, he should'ver been the bigger guy and just shut the fuck up. Of course, he's not though.detritus
- totally, but i'd say thatcher's policies here could be partly responsible for his rise to credibility/ cross to mainstream politics.kingsteven
- also, that 'we'll talk when you renounce violence' really worked out for her eh? in the mean time we'll intern your supporterskingsteven
- supporters - all martyrs in the making. driving the poorest from both communities irreconcilably apart.kingsteven
- so yeah, still very much 'happening'.kingsteven
- Still festering, just politically in a quiet patch. It'll flare up again when one side or another sees the other getting an advantage.mikotondria3

Gerry Adams
Margaret Thatcher did great hurt to the Irish and British people during her time as British prime minister. Working class communities were devastated in Britain because of her policies. Her role in international affairs was equally belligerent whether in support of the Chilean dictator Pinochet, her opposition to sanctions against Apartheid South Africa; and her support for the Khmer Rouge.
Here in Ireland her espousal of old draconian militaristic policies prolonged the war and caused great suffering. Her failed efforts to criminalise the republican struggle and the political prisoners is part of her legacy. It should be noted that in complete contradiction of her public posturing, she authorised a back channel of communications with the Sinn Fein leadership but failed to act on the logic of this. Unfortunately she was faced with weak Irish governments who failed to oppose her securocrat agenda or to enlist international support in defence of citizens in the north.
Margaret Thatcher will be especially remembered for her shameful role during the epic hunger strikes of 1980 and 81. Her Irish policy failed miserably.
- Gerry Adams was also a total cockgoldieboy
