Do any of you have any success with recruiters?
I am a young designer looking for work in NY and thinking about LA.

If you can't find any work - freelance, full time or otherwise, they certainly don't hurt.

Some years ago I have been contacted by Janou Pakter for one of their clients, they negotiated the salary higher than I would have ever asked and coached me for the interview. I finally ended up at another company, but the experience was very positive.

- a bit too big/corporate for me at that time, but would have been interesting.dyspl

I'd like to hear folks' thoughts on this again.
I've only met 1 good recruiter out of dozens.

Yes. I can speak highly of Creative Circle here in Chicago. They get a bad rap from people for a variety of reasons which I can only surmise comes down to thinking they - or any recruiter - are going to get you a sweet job when you have no experience to speak of. I didn't use a recruiter until I had 11 years of experience, looking for a new job in 2013.
I did get contacted - and still do - by several recruiters that didn't give the impression they could get me a job at a place I actually wanted to work. There are so many IT specific recruiters out there trying to get into more creative and UX recruiting and they just don't have the ability to get people into top agencies.
I can speak highly of Onward Search as well. They got me my current job that went from freelance to full time back in August.
But again, I have to stress that if you don't have much experience, it's going to be tough for any recruiter to be open to talking to you.

Most of em are parasites, and you're really just a number on a list that they have to pad.
That said, I got hooked up with my current gig through one. Although they didn't really do much other than put me in touch with the company.
All the salary negotiating I did myself.

Good ones are like rocking horse shit from an employee's perspective. But if you're an agency trying to find someone, they are much more appealing than an open recruitment drive and then having to sift through 3,000 applications from India.

I've had a flurry of contacts since i actually filled in my Linked In page, and I feel that they are probably better for freelancers rather than full time (at least here in NYC). I feel like they are also good if you're looking for in house brand work too.
Most good jobs aren't really advertised, they come from meeting people yourself and forming relationships.
