Shopify can be quite some work depending on how heavily you want to customise. Most templates are fairly customizable, liquid is easy for a scripting language (but odd, it for instance doesn't do even the simplest mathematical operations). It's the checkout that is a bit of a mess containing lots of what looks like legacy code from Shopify's early days you often have little control over other than with CSS !important overrides.
What you learn in the process is worth it in the end, even if it takes more time than you initially thought it would.
BTW, register as a developer and launch the client's store from your affiliate link, you will get 20% of what they pay Shopify, forever.
