My mac is freezing a lot. Having to force power off / restart...Slow turning on etc. Is there a free / cheap prog that will scan and fix stuff?
As you can tell I've no idea what I'm talking about, just need something to speed it back up. Should be ok I think, 2010 MBP i7 dual 2.66 with 8GB. 140GB HD free.

memory clean^^ just purges RAM, same as typeing Purge in terminal. Does free up memory but slows down performance. I could do with somthing that scans my mac and tells me whats up with it. Like a doctor.

There's no one app to do this, use standard troubleshooting:
See if some process is hogging the cpu/memory (Activity Monitor)
Clear your desktop of files if you have a lot of stuff on there it can slow performance
Repair Disk Permissions (from Disk Utility)
Run disk repair with Disk Utility on Hard Disk to correct HD faults
Disable Startup Items (in User Profile)
Check performance in a new user profile (create new profile, login, test from there if no issues, something in your profile is damaged)

Just elaborating on Craig's comment about Memory Clean,
free ram is wasted ram.
So at the minute I have:
Free: 130meg
Wired: 515meg
Active: 1.85gb
Inactive: 1.51gbPeople tend to see this and think "SHIT I'VE RUN OUT OF MEMORY" when that's just not true. Inactive ram is like a cache, data which apps are no longer using is dumped there and will be freed as required.
Running these commands and apps that "Free" memory do fuck all, it just dumps all the inactive ram back into free ram which is just going to make your machine slower because anything that was in there and could be used again quickly is all going to have to be read from disk again.

Free memory pro seems to free up space for me.
