EA know they have something good with this version that nobody can really compete with. Their target market don't care about paying for DLC or always on DRM they just want to play the new Simcity for hours. If it turns some people off they don't care because they keep the core and the casual gamer who doesn't care and still have a cash cow.

    • Exactly. Like me, I will play for hours and probably never even notice the DRM/DLC issue.monospaced
    • There are some DRMs that you do notice and they dont work. games for marketplace for example.plash
    • I don't follow. What's this marketplace? What DRMs do I notice?monospaced
    • games for marketplace is MS's DRM app. and it's notorious for not working correctly .. so whenplash
    • you buy your game..batman arkham city for example// you have to sift through message boards b/cplash
    • you can't authenticate with MS live since it doesn't recognize you're account.plash
    • I have a Mac, so don't know anything about MS's store.monospaced
    • you're better off pirating since that copy works without issues.plash
    • mac version uses games for marketplace too. it's not a platform issue.plash
    • pirating what? what are you on about?monospaced
    • SimCity isn't a Microsoft product and it isn't using their marketplace, and I sure as fuck don't notice it.monospaced
    • ok, you're just not following.plash
    • I'm not following because I'M talking about SimCity and your'e talking about MS and Batman or something.monospaced
    • the topic of this side was DRM ..plash
    • Jesus mono, do try and keep up old boy.detritus
    • I'm keeping up fine, but the comments about his problems with MS DRM is irrelevant.monospaced
    • Well you just might not be all the well informed about DRM. Dont take it harsh, there's no need for retort.plash
    • I'm fully aware, i just think we got sidetracked talking about an issue that doesn't exactly relate to thismonospaced
    • so i made this comment under the assumption that it wasn't a complete fucking disaster like it has become.lodef

i can't believe people cried over this as much as they did and still do.
First world really has lost touch. wait until someone you love gets an illness, see how much you care about simcity.

    • you came in to this thread to whinge about this? You're on the same truck, man.detritus
    • And yes, whinging about a computer game on a forum is the total sum of my complaint in the universe. Stupid.detritus
    • it would seem you also have issues with people who don't follow vyda gaming.antagonlsta

    • i dont think im the one with the issues. but then again i dont whine about computer gamesantagonlsta
    • But you're ok whinging about whinging about computer games? That strikes me as being much higher-minded.detritus
    • not, bitching, a reminder. i could care less if you have feels for vyda.antagonlsta
    • ill let you have the last world since this little spat you're having inst of any interest. grew up, you're a child in a mans world.antagonlsta
    • oh jesus - 'feels'? Really? Go back and browse kittens and Harry Potter memes on Reddit. ffs, I'm wasting my time here.detritus
    • world. dont forget that,antagonlsta

cbass99's comment just made me think of the comments older members of my family would make when I was younger, trying to feign some kind of superior form of arrogant ignorance by claiming they had no knowledge of common cultural benchmarks.

Someone who works with computers and who is, presumably, under their mid 40s, claiming they've never heard of simcity does seem quite odd to me - it's like me claiming I've no idea who Justin Bieber is or who Take That were the generation before - sure, I've got fuck all interest in that end of the culturals pectrum, but I am a human with eyes and ears.

Would you think the same of someone who'd not heard of Mario or Tetris?

    • not having a go at you, cbass99 - as I say, I'm just surprised.detritus
    • No, i wouldn't think less of them.antagonlsta
    • I never implied that i think 'lessee' of them - stop interjecting concepts I'm not creatingdetritus
    • "How big is the rock you live under?" that's a positive statement of projection.antagonlsta

I was really interested in this 'til I read about the DRM/permanent-internet connection requirement, and that a lot of the Beta testers are stating that they think that certain core features are being held back so they can be sold on as additional DLC.

EA truly know how to fuck over their consumers, so fuck 'em.

    A shame.

    • Also, it's a fucking single-player game - stop trying to make everything multiplayer, you money-wringing cunts.detritus
    • fuck micro transactions and DLC, those things are ruining iternexbcn
    • I'm pretty sure you can still play the game out of the box without any DLC.monospaced
    • No shit? I'm definitely sure that's not what I implied.detritus
    • I gathered that was your implication when you said they would ruin it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.monospaced
    • I just meant that you don't HAVE to purchase DLC or any of that to play.monospaced
    • If developers lowered the price of games a bit, the micro-payments would be easier to swallow.ETM
    • Somebody should do that experiment with a larger game and see if it results in more DLC purchases and greater total income.ETM

I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with this game or how it works. Is it like a virtual world that you can just go around and buy stuff/talk to people?

    • How big is the rock you live under?detritus
    • really? because I don't play video games means I live under a rock? Was an honest qcbass99

Oh sweet joy! FIRST DLC (free) is a Nissan Leaf ad.

I have heard of it, even from some years ago..I just never played it and didn't know any details of the game or the objective. I know it's a virtual world, I was just curious as to what is so great about the game. Genuinely.

For instance, in Grand Theft Auto, someone posted a bunch of YouTube videos of funny stuff happening in the game..That's kind of what I was fishing for when I stated my original question.

    • Google it FFSmonospaced
    • There are like millions of YouTube videos for the gamemonospaced
    • take it easy..cbass99
    • Take it easy? Did I come off as upset? I just think it's weird to ask about a game without even bothering to look for yourselfmonospaced

I got the game and I its the best Simcity i've ever played! REALLY cool game. I only have one major negative point to highlight about this game and its the size of the cities... they are too small... you cover the entire zone pretty fast and you dont know where to build new stuff without destroying something else first. Let just hope they will release an update for larger cities. My PC is really powerful, i can easily handle way more stuff in there. come on EA!

    • That will be 10$ a city block. Thanks, EA.lodef
    • at this point, if EA tried to charge for game improvements they will feel the wrathmonospaced
    • thats very true. i bet the CEO ousting was to pave the way towards a complete rethinking of the whole DLC thing.lodef
    • that's part of the challenge, to rezone your area to help your city thrivealbums

Oh, this is cool - some smart fucker's made an HTML version of the new SimCity - fuck paying EA!

  • Frosty_spl0

Damn so it's not worth it then? What kind of DLC is there?

  • bulletfactory0

Looks cool. I never really played the game seriously... Probably played it once or twice... I bilt a 1 room 'house', surrounded all but 1 square with water and sped up time. She would cry, get lonely, wet herself, etc. I remember actually feeling bad about it; poor little sim.

    • That's Sims, you mad jotter.

It's a game for wee lassies!
      detritus
    • ah- does that make me more or less manly for not realizing they're 2 different games?bulletfactory
    • I don't know any more, man.

I've read that the city size is *tiny* - that being one of the things a Beta tester wondered aloud as being a DLC extra.

If so - sure, it might only be an extra $5 - but SimCity's a slightly mature-oriented game, and that being the case I'd rather be treated like the 36 year old I am and buy a complete package from the off, even if it costs a bit extra.

I'll be fucked if I'm going to have a consumer-hating company try and gamify its rip-off process and carrot-dangle game aspects its arbitratily sliced off in order to improve its bottom line.

    .

Fact is, as all moves in the industry indicate, particularly in regard to the rise of Independents - if you treat your customers respectfully and don't presume them to be criminals, they'll probably spend more money with you.

    .

Christ, a 36 year old whinging about computer games on an internet forum. Je suis doomed.

    • isn't that because this one has more micro-management? (city size)ernexbcn
    • lolplash
    • Perhaps, I don't know. I wasn't a beta tester, so I've not been hands on.detritus
    • I guess since you play the entire region (16 cities) they limitied them to "medium"monospaced
  • Frosty_spl0

DLC? WTF quit nickle and diming everyone.

    • Want to rid your town of pesky tornadoes and destructive earthquakes? Get insurance for only $10.Frosty_spl
    • Once again, I don't think any of the DLC is required to play.monospaced
    • If it's pay only for dumb stuff you don't need, I'm fine with that. Like 5 bucks for a crazy mansion.Frosty_spl
    • As much as I've read, that's the case. If you want expansion packs n' stuff, you pay.monospaced
  • detritus0

Ah cool - that makes more sense - perhaps my 'rock' comment came across as snarky, it was supposed to be bemused.

You start off with a budget, you build utilities infrastructure, lay out development zones and roads, set it to play then spend 4 months real time of your life tweaking taxes, layouts, balancing books and then waking up one day wondering what on Earth you've done with your life before installing it, swearing you'll never do that again.

Then, a decade later when the latest version comes out again and the pain and humiliation from your first bout is forgotten, you install it again, then waste a week playing with the thing for half an hour each night, more reaching the point where you ask yourself existential questions about purpose, hope and love.

    • 'before uninstalling it' evendetritus
    • i really wish we could edit posts on QBN. Or, I wish I could hurry my posts less.detritus
    • thanks detritus. i'd rather get a summary like yours than search google. thanks again.cbass99

I haven't actually played the game yet, but I've been following the news pretty closely since the launch, and one thing's been bugging me constantly and I'm not sure anyone's addressed it. Some help understanding this, please:

If the game is really "connected" to other cities and relies on them for an evolution (population, power, etc), that's fine. I think the concept is cool, but how the fuck does it actually work when say, one guy is running his city at Cheetah Speed for days while the guy in the neighboring city is running at slow speed, or even paused?

How can the cities be truly reliant on each other if they're moving at different paces and such? One guy might have a population boom before the other guy finishes zoning. If the always-online thing is necessary for an integrated experience, how integrated is it REALLY when people are working so separately and, for lack of a simpler term or concept, time traveling?

    • I think you've put more thought into it than they did. FFS they have the people simmed by the same system as roads and sewers.i_monk

    • it makes no sense, how can guys from one city work in another that's moving 50x faster?monospaced

    @i_monk

I agree, for the most part. I also wish the city size was larger. I know they want to make the game playable on 6-yr-old computers, but those of us with newer machines should have the option to play larger territories.

Also, where the fuck is "God" mode? Since the first version one has been able to terraform the terrain, build mountains, create rivers and coasts and canyons, but now that seems entirely gone. That was, for me and millions of others, a HUGE part of the game!

    • Our computers could handle terrain editing 18 years ago, so I don't know what the hell they're thinking.i_monk

Sorry to bang on about this. but people need to get it into their heads that they shouldn't have to tolerate this kind of bullshit on a product they've just paid good money for. There's no real need for it and it won't actually solve anyting for them.

Accept this now - and what crap do you think they'll dream up to shit on your game-time experience in future?

There's a big reason people flock to unlocked, DRM-free and indie games, and it's only going to get bigger.

    • you're pretty upset about it. i wish i cared, sorry man, i just got bigger problems, you know.plash

I hacked up a map. Im also being generous on the size of 2013 version, I think it's actually a lot smaller if you compare actual city buildings / road size. I just compared based on the 'blocks' that the builder had setup.

    • scaling is off, look at your roads.plash
    • those are double wide roads tho... on the new one i mean. if you look at the actual road size its 1/2 what you see here.mantrakid
