Time and a certain amount of income are certainly determining factors.
Raise your hands... do any of you do it?

I've never met a designer or programmer that hasn't done at least one pro-bono job

I do it for a cycling team (it's a friend's team)... http://stage17.org/

Every year I used to participate in a 24hr design marathon, service-learning project at my old university, providing creative direction to students, along with my former professors. Extremely rewarding to provide professional design (small websites, logos, posters, etc) for local non-profits.
Moved away but might fly back this year to participate again.

I have done many ... though this was when I was starting out.
I bump up against it today, a great deal, as I'm sure as many of you all do; individuals or organizations expecting free design... as if it isn't a real skill and a hobby at most that isn't very time consuming.
- think I'm just trying to figure out how to say "no" even to the greatest causes.ohhhhhsnap

It's a must.
