I use WP for all of my sites and currently starting on a new project that will take me a while to set up. I want to do the set up on the domain I've created where I've already put the WP install, but:
1. I don't want it crawled or found yet.
2. I don't want anyone but me to be able to access it.What's the best way to go about this? Password at the server level to access domainname.com? Robots.txt as well to keep it from being crawled?

it asks you when you first install if you want it to be accessed by google
- This is a self-hosted install/setup. Is what you're describing something for wordpress.com sites?mg33

also look up robots.txt hiding a directory

Thanks man. Got it working; added protection at the url/folder level on my server which should stop anything from hitting it.

I'd like to also thank Martin Luther King for all he accomplished, and the ability to have the day off from work to work on my own goals.

Watch the RSS feed functionality, mg33 - I made this mistake on a WP install a couple of years back.
Neither client nor their potential customer was particularly enthused by the expletive-laden test site they managed to find with Google one morning.

Ha, good point actually detritus. So, in the process of testing a site and adding test content that will eventually be taken down... wonder if I'm best doing the test setup on a domain that is different from the one that will go live. Thought about that originally. This is my own project, so not so concerned, but if that RSS feed is out there, sure, that stuff would be found.
Any chance to disable a feed temporarily?
- Aye, there's an option in the admin somewhere to disable it - I don't WP no more, so can't recall where.detritus

htaccess password, the most efficient way to not let google crawl your website.

Why dont you work locally? Set up MAMP....

Plus use the plugin Lock Out. If you aren't logged in you can't see the site.
