It occurs to me I should turn the track pad off when not using it, but I'll be setting up my wacom soon enough and probably end up using that more anyway.
- it shuts down after a time by itselfmonospaced
- I figured it shut down if the computer went to sleep, but w/e.i_monk

I've heard about Adobe Premier and After Effects CS6 not being able to take full advantage of the new iMac graphics card GPU. You can manually add the graphics card used in the new iMacs to Adobe's list of supported cards (I assume this would need to be done with each upgrade) for better rendering, exporting etc...

Any one have experience with this?

... my iMac is less than two weeks old and my track pad battery just fell below 90%. Not impressed.
- I have the wireless mouse at work and it sucks batteries like crazy, I hate the thingernexbcn
- do you really use the trackpad that much?monospaced
- check out rechargeable batteries, might change everythingmonospaced
- rechargeable batteries last 3 hours - use lithium batteries, expensive but they last weeksspot13
- BS. my work machine's (rechargeable) magic mouse batteries usually last about 2 months... my lap top ones still going since before xmas.kingsteven
- at 46% since before christmaskingsteven

Posting from my shiny new iMac – finally.
Still have to figure how to get all the files from my old MBP to this thing. Migration Assistant doesn't detect it over ethernet and doesn't seem to actually transfer anything over Bluetooth. (And why do torrents download so much slower?) Much tinkering to do this weekend...
- haha, mac is sooo easymekk
- They are easy. Just use a FireWire adapter.monospaced
- did mine over ethernet last week, was really quick. only thing didn't work was creative cloud THANTS ADOBBBEkingsteven
- Ethernet works fine for mefyoucher1
- How nice for all of you. My 7 year old MBP never passes up the opportunity to fuck up something basic.i_monk

I stumbled on this thread at the perfect time.
I've been contemplating a new system for a while and had up until this point been leaning towards a mac mini w/ external 27" led, or 13" mbp with an external monitor so I could plug in my work's mbp and work comfortably at home on the big screen. Now that I know for sure the 27" iMac can be used as an external screen this is gold! I have a 24" iMac now that's been brilliant thus far but it's maybe from 2009 and needs an upgrade. Thank you guys for your insight and feedback.

I did eventually order one... it won't arrive until the second week of March. Those Chinese kids aren't working hard enough!

Moldero - do you do much vfx work? If not a mac mini is plenty good for editing and grading. Unless you start venturing into the world of uncompressed 4k.

- god dammitmoldero

nice.
ide really love to get rid of the mac pro, but im a video guy.
really considering it.
how many additional displays can you add on this thing?- if you want a Mac Pro, just wait, I think they'll be announcing their plans for that this week or nextmonospaced
- I was just talking to a friend a few days ago how the problem with being a video guy is all the gear, and the size of itmoldero
- I have no problems with my gear, or the size of it. ;)monospaced
- if an imac can do what my MP can do now ide be happymoldero
- hehe, i know what your sayin.
i have lights, jibs, dollys and all that crap, if i could simplify my workstation, itd be awesomemoldero - stressin over the stateside move soon, hauling $$$$ of gear in my trailer and all these damn narco checkpoints, im stressing their gonna "confiscate" my shitmoldero
- gonna "confiscate" my shitmoldero

Definitely considering getting one of these or a new 15" mbp retina. Still a bit concerned about the bugs I've read about with retina though...
- Unless you NEED a laptop form factor, the fast iMac almost smokes the MBP Retinamonospaced

Okay, didn't think I would get to this point so soon, but I need recommendations on an external DVD drive for my new iMac. I tried using my old computer to create an image (.iso and .cdr masters) but those failed to "trick" my new iMac into thinking they're inserted physical discs. The Remote Drive feature works brilliantly, but also fails to convince my computer that the disc is actually inside.
This leaves me with the option of buying Apple's USB Superdrive ($60-$79) or a 3rd party alternative. Does anyone have a recommendation? I'd prefer to have input from somebody who actually uses one, not just links to cheap drives that you Googled. Anyone have experience with this?
- Have you tried making a .dmg? Sometimes that works.nb
- yeah, tried it all, and I've concluded it's all related to the protection built into the disc and the application it holdsmonospaced
- We've got a USB superdrive in the studio for our Mac Mini Server. Barely need to use it, so can't really comment.Nathan_Adams
- But the couple times we have, it worked completely fine.Nathan_Adams
- Thanks. I figure the Superdrive is a no brainer, but not sure it's worth that much for one DVD.monospaced

Just bought one on sunday to replace the 7-yr old MBP that finally took a shit.
I got the 27", 3.2hz, 8gb ram, 1tb fusion hdd... it's fucking amazing.
That's about it. If you're in the market you can't beat it. Amazing product.

bump for new replies.
I think I'll be ordering one this week, finally.

I didn't realize the mouse had swipe gestures, but isn't it awkward on a curved surface? I've had a MBP for 6 years now and rather like the track pad on it, so I imagine it would be even better with multi-touch and swipes.
- actually, it works really wellmonospaced
- I found the trackpad too heavy to click, so only using it for swipes, alongside magic mouseribit
- you just tap/touch it to click, you don't have to press teh button, LOLmonospaced
- i_monk0
Anyone using the track pad instead of the mouse? I'm tempted to go that route for general GUI use (and Wacom for work).
- I'm using the trackpad for swipes, shortcuts, and scrolling...the mouse and wacom intuos 5 for mousing (but have touch capabilities turned off on wacom)fyoucher1
- ...touch capabilities turned off on wacom)fyoucher1
- The Magic Mouse covers swipes, scrolling, and even Exposémonospaced
- Yeah but my left hand is free. Plus my hands are always a lil moist so swipes are difficult on the magic mousefyoucher1
- well, sorry about your sweaty hand issuemonospaced
- Gave up on magic mouse after huge RSI pain. Too heavy. Batteries ≠ progress...MrT

I will wait for new Sharp 3,840-by-2,160-pixel display (better than retina) ihttp://9to5mac.com/2013/01/08/h...

Prediction: Apple will start rolling out Retina displays sooner or later, people will be crying the company cheated them selling them old-style displays in the slim new iMacs.
- a 27" Retina display is overkill, and would require a new generation of yet-unbuilt video cards to run itmonospaced
- <ThisArmandoEstrada
- prediction, nobody will complain that their computer doesn't have retina display when/if Apple does thismonospaced
- Eventually a Retina iMac is coming, though. Not this year, maybe not next year. 2015 at the latest.nb
- LOL. Ridiculous long-term speculations in the tech wolrd are stupid because they're obvious. Watch.monospaced
- Sony will release a new Playstation and it will have better graphics and be faster. Guaranteed in the next 5 years.monospaced
- By the time Apple releases a retina display, they'll be nearly mainstream consumer level already. See below.monospaced
- Yeah man. That's what I'm saying. Shaft's prediction is obvious.nb

I got a BTO 27", i7, 32 GB Ram, 3TB Fusion, 680MX.
Amazing so far. Ran into one speed bump trying to connect two NAS drives but after a bit of Googling, found some solutions.
Also, transferring email signatures was a bit of a pain since they've changed how it works in Mountain Lion (they changed the file format for signature files so you can't just copy and replace.)

I just got one about 2 weeks ago, its amazing. 32 gigs of ram.
I ordered the external dvd drive because I knew i would use it eventually, and it has come in handy have to re-install some software here and there.
