Not to say that web design is unimportant. It's important and valuable.
But I would hate to have a portfolio just full of websites. So boring.

Cool story bro.

Well that's very true vaxorcist.
- dumb thread.antagonista
- extremely, but at least it's design related.CyBrainX

Well, I would think if you're job is web, and someone is hiring you for web, they don't care much about that print brochure you did.
Sounds like another designer more concerned about impressing their peers with their portfolio than the people that make them money, the client.
- And that's not an insult, but an unfortunate frame of mind common in the industry.ETM
- There is often a sycophant like mentality for some designers who NEED approval from other industry people.ETM
- I'd rather impress peers than people I don't know.fredddddd
- Funny I'd rather support my fam and have a comfortable living. But I don't crave external validation.ETM
- sometimes impressing your peers and making a usable website for users are OPPOSITEvaxorcist
- I've found the industry often full of a insecure, bitter lot. You'll go mad if all you ever care about is their validation.ETM
- It's a lot like YouTube comments...ETM

Not necessarily about impressing our "peers".
I'm talking about using our creative talents and minds to make things that are a little more important than a website.
But also, I'm just so burnt out on web stuff.

I agree, design for the sake of design is usually just as lame.
But there is something to be said in creating something that isn't just another call-to-action to buy some shit product or shit idea.

It's not important or valuable. It's actually fits the definition of excessive. Not one website in the world is needed. While some may actually provide some sort of service and useful information. There's nothing online of any benefit which can't be provided by a book or phone call. Aside from that, most sites merely feed an individuals need to self indulge in X.

Everyone knows the easiest way to get a job now is to have lots of brochure designs in your book.
- fate0
Trust me Frosty, I know what you're saying. :) I've been doing web shit years after I grew to hate it just for the paycheck.
- Frosty_spl0
I wish I could design something with cool paper and inks. haha
All I do are things for the web.

So do something on your own for creativity or art's sake. Why does it have to be a commission if you're looking for a creative outlet.

It is very lame. It got interesting for a while because of Flash. Now that Flash is basically dead it's back to more utility based static websites, facebook pages and banners. The budgets to do interesting/experimental things for brands are just not there.

web design sucks. too many rules and best practices.

I'm going to have to agree with this thread. The era of excitement and optimism that you could turn the world upside down with the web is gone.
It's been replaced with nebbish techie business managers who spout though-leadership palaver like a bunch of dickheads.

- the late 90's had some interesting times of experimental stfuf.... true..vaxorcist

nothing is stopping any of you from doing what you what you want - or making what you want web-design to be - during your off-time.

The problem with web design is content and budget.
If you're designing a website that tells a visitor all about the services of a local business, you're using a standard CMS, and you don't have an unlimited about of programmers to code it, your design is going to look like any number of wordpress templates. If the client wants it to be responsive you're even more boxed in. And further more, if the content and VI is rubbish, you're going to end up with a little bit less of your soul than when you started.Online strategy is the new web design.
Or only work for international brands where boundaries can still be pushed.
As for print, didn't we reach the limits of what's possible 50 years ago?
- 50 years ago? no?colin_s
- I can't think of anything you can do now you couldn't with the first computer run offset printersmydo
- InDesign has got a lot better thoughmydo

While I agree to a point...this is really just bitching. Get over yourself and do what you think you should be doing instead of crying about it on a fucking (pointless) website.
Those of you mad flash is gone, learn to code JS and start doing more interesting things. Expand your skill set.

Web is good if it's an extension of a brand and print materials.
Content matters.
If you're working on FB campaigns or on whatever M&M's or Home Depot online site, then you're wasting your life. Too many huge companies try too hard to get online campaigns that just dissapear in a month.
