Am I crazy? People refer to 500px as a great photo site, but all I see is endless hours of tedious photoshop driven by bad style choices (I just saw a sad, but polished, copy of Avatar). Really, am I crazy?
Add tits and you get 50% extra votes. What gives, this site is the high end version of photoshop disasters.

You are not crazy.
- inteliboy0
Yup. Same goes for flickr. Frustrating to see vomit worthy photos with pages of positive comments/reinforcement.

Adding tits to anything in this life surely gets you more.

Welcome to the world where everyone can do it! The idea was, if i remember correctly, that everyone;s access to the means of production (cheap photo cameras) would produce work that is outside of the normal of establishment - work that is unique and original presenting a personal point of view but as it turned out it simply shows how lame and average majority of people are.
Moreover as the definer of quality was taken out of hands of professionals and editors and put in hands of the public (with their votes and view counts) the quality suffered even more as the most generic and lowest-common-denominator work was prized by the "masses" who really have no clue.
(BTW this is true of EVERY creative medium)

There is no easy fix as unlike in the past where the editor had power of the press (power over the medium of dissemination of information) today it's hard for one individual to fight against mediocricity as his/her critique will be drowned by an avalanche of simple "it's awesome!" or "it's great!" comments as after all everyone has an equal voice - even the talentless morons of the crowd has as much say as the one who knows.
- pr2-3
BTW it's not only the general public that's septic to that "i can do it too!" attitude - it's equally true of professionals in similar creative fields. As someone above said, "Show your latest pics" is a perfect example where the designers assuming that one discipline (design and typography - a visual medium) has to spill into another visual medium (photography) and then you get countless pages with mostly average at best photographs without even most rudimentary understanding of meaning behind images.

just like any photo site: flickr, 500px, and instagram. hdr + tits = win!

Ok, so, it's very easy to look at 500px and flickr and find crap. And we can talk all day about how putting the tools in the hands of everyone ruined photography. But, can you find some examples of good work? Can you name a NEW photographer that is above all the rest.
If you know crap when you see it, you know quality, too. Show me.

just google imaged "HDR TITS"
1st row, 6th image wtf

nb, the question is not if there is good work out there - there is - but rather how we as viewers change looking "for" and "at" the work. Bombarded with crap you assume that the first thing you see will be crap thus you don't even bother spending any time looking at the work. Everything only gets a fraction of second of your attention and in this kind of environment work of quality that requires time and isn't delivered to you with an instant Bang! will not get noticed.
- inteliboy0
On the other side of the coin -- sometimes I feel there is a huge amount of great work out there. And even with the mass of shit work, at least people are out taking photos, writing music, creating digital art or whatever. Especially here in Melbourne where Sport is king, it's good to see "art" be accessible for everyone.

it's the question of:
lots of art of shaky quality
OR
less art but of higher quality
- monNom0
There's always been lots of art of shakey quality. We all have grandma's, we've all seen it.
Go to a gallery if you want something currated.
