a few months ago a read a story about an ad agency or design studio or something in the business, that instead of getting paid a full fee they would take less money in return for a share in the client's business.
Has anyone ever heard of this or know the name of that firm?

Not sure of the example you're referring to, but I think partial equity, especially in the startup world, is a fairly common bargaining chip.

Many agencies do it these days but Anomaly are regarded as one of the originals

i've heard Milton Glaser say that he did this with the Brooklyn Brewery logo and it paid off well.
