1. what is it... really?
2. do you get to do it in your job/freelancing?

Clients say they want our creativity, but what their really after is our technical skills.

For me these days, it's solving other people's problems as best and cheaply for them and as profitably and easily for me.
It's an eternal war in which I'm not sure there can ever be a victor.

DesignWeek article - what is creativity?
- monNom0
1) practically, it is bringing into existence something which did not previously exist.
That could be anything. A paper airplane that heads straight down once you've thrown it? Still creative. Maybe bad creative, but still creative.
2) yes. not always good, but if you're not failing, you're not learning.

I have shared this before, but I just thought I would share this article again that I have always found very interesting,
The Observer Magazine 2002 What’s the Big Idea? 10 gifted individuals talk about their source of ideas. Including Mark Wallinger, Bobby Gillespie, JG Ballard, Eddie Izzard, Peter Saville, Corinne Day and others.
I always found it an interesting read about creativity and ideas in different creative fields.

Creativity used to be the deliverable. You could earn your keep by purely being creative. It had a retail value. It was highly valued stock in its own right.
Now creativity is a tool and the end goal is whatever it is you are applying your creative abilities to. Its no good just being creative. You have to be able to apply it as a value-booster to a commodity.

Write to anyone you like, today, and describe yourself in the most glowing and compelling terms as 'a highly creative individual'. See where that gets you.
Go back to the late 80's and do that, and you'd be in the door making decisions once you'd shown some examples of your creativity.
