What I've been trying to tell my all nighter friends,
it is not worth it, we're not curing cancer, we're not saving the world, we're just trying to make people buy crap,
It is sad that he had to arrive at the end of his life to realize it, but his rant rings so true with me it hurts,
for the past year I've been learning other skills in my "free" time, and I hope to jump shit in a few years because at the end of the day it is really not worth it,

Jump shit and move on my friend

Took him that long to figure that out?

Doctors who cures cancer like to buy the shit we sell, then we help them to make things easier for their harsh existence, then we cure cancer (sarcasm)

Too true.
Its a shame you have to bust your balls just to do a creative job these days.
I want to come in and work hard but at 6pm, its my time and I have other commitments in life.
Its sad that there are so many slimy gits who wander round the office at 6pm asking the seniors if they need help with anything because they are happy to stay late.
- Complaining about staying after 6 hardly sounds like you're busting your balls.animatedgif
- @ animated, if you work in a well organised place, staying after 6 can happen but only seldomly,GeorgesII
- don't you have a progress, team meeting, a planner, people who are paid to not make you waster your timeGeorgesII
- GeorgesII, you've been brainwashed into thinking your not working hard unless you leave later than 6qTime
- Sorry I meant, animatedgifqTime
- Just saying it's a bit silly to complain that your competition is willing to work longer/harder than you.animatedgif
- Sounds like you'd be better off working somewhere less competitive if it bothers you.animatedgif

"Then some bright spark had the idea of setting everyone up in competition. It became a contest. A race. Winner gets to keep his job."

Used to work late everyday...7...8...9. I didn't care...and actually liked it.
I guess I sort of defined myself by my career. Then my son was born.
I am out the door by 6 come hell or high water.
Nothing is worth not spending time with the little dude.

We're (designers) are trying to make the world a prettier place, and that makes people happier.
Maybe you have the wrong clients or are doing stupid work.

Craftsmen are some of the happiest people.
- sure, when you use the word "craftsmen" there's an aura about it. but it's mostly just bullshit.CanHasQBN
- Not much craft in Ctr C, Ctr V.qTime
- Building a chair isn't curing cancer either TBFanimatedgif

I had a habit of staying late at one gig just because, once all the account staff left, it was finally peaceful and possible to get something done... I got more done from 5:30 to 7pm than the rest of the day....
I tried telling this to a manager who just didn't get it.... I was trying to change my hours from 9-5 to 11-7, but management wouldn't allow it...
- Sometimes I come in at 8 but if I leave at 5 everyone thinks I'm slacking.qTime
- We allow people to work from home for this reason. People tend to get more quiet timeGlitterati_Duane
- @Glitterati_Duane, you must work at a good place... I'm a freelancer now, can't stand office banter...vaxorcist

I just re-read the whole thing and the guy is trully spot on,
this is an sms I got from my best friend who work for one of those coveted worldwide 4 letter agency. Over there, they work till the designer fall asleep on the sofa, no way they let you go home till you're dead tired.
october 20th- 6PM
"hey, gianni, excuse me, I just woke up. The other day in agency I did 30 hours straight without sleeping. I'm fuckn fucked up"- No reason for this except to make boss man / client more $$$qTime
- qTime0
I don't understand how people can be proud of working these extreme hours. Its not like you just made the world a better place.
- doesnotexist0
completely agree, entirely not worth it. i make sure i go home before 2am now. there's always work tomorrow to be done.
- fredddddd0
He lived in NZ.
I bet most of us have never seen anything he worked on.
- qTime0
There is also a supply and demand issue here.
The more designers looking for work = longer hours.Every year colleges churn out more and more design students. How many get a job in design?
- you're feeding the hype. the schools don't create these kids from petri dishes.zenmasterfoo
- Its more about there are more and more designers for the amount of jobs.qTime
- and photographers too. and probably many other disciplines.zenmasterfoo

Man. This is timely for me. I'm writing a paper about spec work right now and it's amazing how we as creatives allow ourselves to be treated just so we can stay in this industry.
- we should form a union or occupy something.zenmasterfoo
- We have the GDC/RGD here and the AIGA in the States. Considering renewing my membership actuallyGlitterati_Duane
- forgive me, I was being sarcastic.zenmasterfoo
- My bad. Didn't see that you were from the USGlitterati_Duane
- Its funny how some people laugh at unions. “First they came...”qTime
- yup from US born in Venezuela. Had my share of both sides, zenmasterfoo

" It is a universal truth that all artists think they a frauds and charlatans, and live in constant fear of being exposed. We believe by working harder than anyone else we can evaded detection. "
Don't worry about the fresh design grads. They probably suck.
- jaded? yes. more of an insight to his own self-worth rather than of all creatives.zenmasterfoo

The same thing could be said about most other careers

Great article.
