Considering most sites look almost identical, via the demise of Flash and the advent of Word Press, I find it ironic that there are so many that have such different opinions.
I guess it was probably more relevant when there was some good innovation, or more artistic sites being produced (long time since I was inspired by anything on the web).
Just like photography, if the option to promote yourself and take credit for something you are proud of, you are fool not to. If your client doesn't want it, then don't do it. Pretty simple, it seems.
