- If this happened, why wouldn't he just say so instead of lawyering up and not saying anything at all? If he cared about her, he would have reported her missingmonospaced
- Instead, he went home and never said anything to ANYONE, not even her parents! Why hire lawyers if there's nothing to hide?monospaced

re: Heat Waves - It was particularly hot and sunny last week here in UK/LDN, and I found the 'quality' of it quite disconcerting. It's early May and the sunlight was INTENSE - sort of like dry days in really hot, arid climates with totally clear skies. I was getting constantly blinded by reflected glares from cars and such. I began idly wondering at this, surmising that perhaps the huge drop in airplane travel was reducing particulate haze at certain altitudes, which normally deflect or scatter incoming sunlight. Not totally crazy - much the same was measured in the days after 9/11 when transatlantic air travel was stopped. What began worrying me was that if that's the case, then we're now reliant on our emissions to protect us from the intensity of sunlight, which .. well, that wouldn't be Good.
So, prediction: Like alcoholics trying to treat their addictions, we're going to have to gradually taper off emissions even if we somehow came up with fully-functioning fusion tomorrow, elsewise we'll all end up like gingers in Australia, hiding from the sun.
- was discussing similar over the weekend. Everything seems as though it's on fast forward. Environmentally, politically, scientifically.Fax_Benson

- @fax - socially and economically too. Although I suppose they'd be umbrella'd under 'Politically'.
'Interesting times' indeed.Nairn - If anything, Coronavirus is shining a huge light on all the teeter-tottering human systems on the brink of disaster.

"A Long Bet always starts with a prediction. All predictions should come with an argument in support, a financial pledge, and an end-date. The minimum term for a prediction is two years; there is no maximum term. A prediction becomes a bet when a challenger comes forward with a counterargument. The predictor may then choose to make a bet with the challenger. The predictor and challenger will agree on a wager, and each will choose a charitable cause to receive the winnings. When the end-date for the bet passes, The Long Now Foundation adjudicates the bet and donates the proceeds to the winner’s charity of choice."

After over a 100k extra Americans die needlessly from C19 as a direct result of their president's mismanagement, Trump is tried under new legislation and executed.
Not even his ex-rabid fuckwit hick base raises a peep.

I love how commenters are all instant experts these days. New York's rate of growth of new infections changed and commenters everywhere are like "oh, look at the trend, they reduced new cases in one day they should be able to eliminate it soon!" This of course during a week when the city is basically a ghost town.
It's one single data point compared against three or four others. But sure, you have it allll figured out for us. Thanks, internet! Thank you, reddit! You should all be Mayor!

once self-driving cars become more popular, vehicles will begin to be marketed as places of comfort and leisure, with options such as dvd players becoming standard. we will feign responsibility and alertness during trips out of habit but we all know what we want and will eventually get are sleep options.
it will begin with confusion over whether texting while "driving" is still illegal
- scarabin0
in a few years self-driving vehicles will gain traction and the trucking/transport industry will be one of its biggest casualties.
hundreds of thousands of middle-aged, overweight men with no other skills will suddenly find themselves fucked
- I though of that but i think they will be operators to monitor the truck computers dont malfunction. prob they will be able to double loads, 10 yrs full auto?yurimon
- half the amount working? increase in tech maintenance, tech people?yurimon
- if you have a self-driving truck the ability to monitor it remotely isn't much of a stretchscarabin
- though i do think it will take some time for people to accept them as safe, perhaps even an entire generationscarabin
- yeah techs and mechanics will be finescarabin
- they are only dangerous if they go on the streets of today, isn't it more likely that they build separate transportways and operate the thing more like a trainArchitectofFate
- prob the the hov lanes will eventually be turned over?yurimon
- If 1000 of them went out and actively shot at (to disable) drive-less trucks, logistic companies would have to hire a load of cheap security officers. Which mPeter
- ,,,which means lots of more jobs for middle-aged, overweight men with no other skills.Peter
