a client wants an illustration of a complex piece of machinery. they have 3d data of it (don't know the software). what format should i ask them to export for me to have luck with opening and editing in illustrator cs5?

Some thoughts...have never tried it tho
If they're in C4D, can't they export an AE comp? Or export a rich pixel format file for AE from 3DS? Import that into AE, then take the AE comp into Photoshop (Render Comp to Photoshop Layers). I believe the new PS can import 3D data too. Then modify into PS and import into Illy? That way you're maintaining layers and 3D depth data?
Dunno if that works but might be worth a shot.
Or they can prolly export hi-res flats of course

thanks fyoucher - the way over comp is interesting, but i'm sure it's not c4d as they are machine industry. probably autocad. i think i have to tell them exact fileformats - until now they only managed to send me jpg and png - both pixelated and scaled to death. by now i'd rather build the whole thing from scratch. but it would help a lot if i could at least extract some of the complicated curves.

Then open the AutoCad file directly in Illy ....or as an EPS

If you can open them in C4d, make a render using sketches&toons, there's an option to export as vector lines.

my c4d is from last century - i think it won't handle it. i'll ask them for .DXF .DWG .EPS and .PDF now. will report the solution here. i'm pretty sure by pushing the correct button they could render the exact thing they are asking me to draw, but a-hem &)
- If it has sketch and toon render then it should do itanimatedgif
