Question to you folks currently in China. Is facebook and Twitter used in China or do they other social media tools?

    Cheers

I think twitter is filtered content. I forgot whats the deal about facebook because you always hear in the news that china shuts them down then reinstates, hard to keep up...

I have a friend in Shanghai using FB. Are you asking if it's available or if it's popular?

facebook twitter youtube etc are all banned.
even google images doesn't work. but a proxy is only $60 a year and all the expats have one. www.astrill.com

most chinese have access to a proxy, but don't bother using them, as most of the content they want isn't blocked.

    including weibo....

weibo is incredible and incredibly popular, like twitter, only 140 characters is up to 100 words, so you can say a lot more. you can also post pictures.

now the government can't cover things up any more. a recent train crash that was covered up, was public knowledge to millions of people within a few hours. government officials have been fired (or worse). it's changed the country massively.

and much the same as twitter and facebook, 90% of the content is about what people are eating, memes, and pets. (though much much less about getting drunk)

    • You mean to say, "The government will have a much more difficult time trying to cover things up."nb1/2
they use it to their advantage too. very clever.mydo2/2

use google chrome to auto translate.
it may not make much sense as much of the posts are slang

When I was there on business last year my hotel wifi was able to access both Facebook and Twitter. I think it depends on where you stay. I was in Dongguan which is one of the larger factory cities.

no facebook, twitter, picasa, flikr, blogger, or user generated content sites (unless you use VPN, which you have to acquire when out of the country ans those are blocked too ).
